Good performances all around. Nothing out of the ordinary.

As a Jazz Aficionado, you'd think the last thing I'd listen to would be Opera.

You'd be wrong. I have been into Opera since I was about 17. I was actually in the Chorus for three Operas when I was a teen, also taking voice lessons from a Baritone Opera Singer at the time. I was in "Die Fledermaus", "La Traviata" and "Il Trovatore".

Tonight, I'm taking a break from Jazz and listening to "Die Fledermaus" in English from the Metropolitan - Met Opera Association Orchestra, 2010. Some prefer this in German, and I understand. However, this is one opera(etta) that I actually prefer in English. When I was in the Chorus years ago, we did two in German, and one in English.

Billy you sound like a man of many talents, and I like Jazz to!

Thank you, sir. Well, like most here on the Forum, I've had a very full and rich life. But I would not get too Jazzed-Up :) about me being in the Chorus for those three operas. Anyone whom was taking voice lessons with any of the Leads in that Opera Company was automatically in the Chorus by virtue of the fact that the voice teacher would "vouch" for you, giving you an auto-pass to enter the Chorus. And, it was NO-PAY. You did it for free. A lot of work for free, but I was a young teen. What did I know. Great experience. I'd not do it today, but I am glad I have the experience and the memories.

From The Treasury Of Immortal Performances

Mozart

The Marriage Of Figaro
K. 492 Complete

Not found on Discogs, but I did find this on a internet search.

However, performances of Busch released uniquely on the new medium, the Long Playing record, were non existent, except for the odd Concert Hall Society CHC-61 of Schubert's Fifth Symphony with the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra, released in the fall of 1950.
Concert Hall CHC-61 Schubert Symphony No. 5: Fritz Busch conducting the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra.

Dubbings of 78 RPM plates would only gradually appear in the new format. The first was RCA Victor's 2 LP set (LCT 6001) of the 1934 production of 'The Marriage of Figaro', issued in 1952. Singers were Roy Henderson (baritone), Aulikki Rautavaara (soprano), Audrey Mildmay (soprano), Wili Domgraf-Fassbänder (baritone), Haddle Nash (tenor), Norman Allin and Italo Tajo (bass), Constance Willis (mezzo soprano), Luise Hellesgruber (soprano), Fergus Dunlop (bass), Morgan Jones (tenor), Winifred Radford, Fritz Busch conducting.

One of my favourite Tales-- a lot of big names, big production, all living up to the promise. Probably couldn't be done today, so marvel at the good old days!

Puccini's "Turandot" this evening. This is a 1955 Recording.

One of my favorite Arias, "Nessun Dorma" is from this Opera.

Nessun Dorma sung by Sarah Brightman was what moved me to like opera, I suppose everyone has a starting point and that was mine.
