Adjusting tone of Pioneer VSX-D711... only in "stereo direct"???

The above link is the owner manual.

I was trying to adjust the bass in this unit but could only do it by pushing the "stereo direct" button and then making the adjustment. When in "Standard" and "Advanced Surround" modes, I can't change the treble or bass.

How come? Why? If I am in "stereo direct," I can adjust treble and bass, but when I flip back to standard or advanced surround, my changes are not applied/go away.

It seems unusual that bass/treble can't be adjusted for surround modes.

Any help on this would be appreciated... thanks.

I can't access the manual (don't have an account). Is this a case where the surround setup has it's own EQ and the stereo mode uses a separate set of controls?
On an old pre/pro I had (HK), you couldn't adjust tone at all in the "pure" stereo mode - all the tone adjustments were in the digital domain and were unavailable when in analog mode, for example. Check the setup for surround and see what settings are allowed.
