ADS models, an impromptu rollcall

I have all the components from a pair of 470/2's, but no cabinets or grilles. Thought it might be a fun project to build new cabs in a different style since they are supposed to sound really nice.

I enjoy a pair of 910's and L780's. I may have posted this before, but the thread is too long to remember.

Taking the grills off

You can take them off with an ink pen. Just start at one corner and work your way around. They are pressure fitted.

Hello ADS experts ! :D
I picked up some ADS L470 Bookshelf speakers from an estate sale last saturday. They were asking $40 for the pair, but they came down to $30. They are in almost flawless condition.
I'm not sure if they work but I said what the heck... took a chance on them for $30.
Judging by the cosmetic condition, I'm sure they will work.
Not sure how the grills come off.

Anyone have any info on them ? Year ?

thanks

I've had 4 Pair of ADS (5 if you count the rear deck speakers in my second car) Currently have three pair.

L300C (white)
Model 400
L570/2 (black)

I had a very beat up pair of L570/2(woodgrain), no grills, exterior was beat but they worked. One gave up its tweeter for my current pair before being yardsale'd for cheap(recall selling them for $20 or so)

two bigger pair are tucked away for the time being, just got the little guys, LOVE 'em! got them for the metal grills to use in place of my Paradigm Titans in the living room. We have our second kid now and going by the first(who is now 7 and knows better) those living room speakers will get poked by little fingers. So what better protection than a sturdy metal grill!

Folks, any models other than the 710 that are 3 way, 4 driver configuration with woofers 7" or less? Two woofers, mid and a tweeter...

I just spent that last day or so reading through all the amazing work folks did starting a decade ago to collect and share the info on classic ADS speakers. My L730s and L1530s are probably older than I am, but their tone just wows me. Anyway, I tried my best to compile all the info from early on in this thread and elsewhere into an organized and updated list. Eventually, I might try to collect pics of each model and make a little site.

The two-way Lx20s and three-way Lx30 came before the two-way Lx70s and three-way Lx80s. There is a later, and supposedly improved, “version 2” for all the Lx10s.

Nice work on the list! I might be able to help you with photos of many of the models. I've been saving images from ebay when I run across some of the a/d/s speakers that I'm interested in.

I just spent that last day or so reading through all the amazing work folks did starting a decade ago to collect and share the info on classic ADS speakers.

You do know there is a 1992 price list for all the parts and models of the ADS company on the interweb? This lists some of the missing info in your compilation post, like the 320i auto speakers I have in one car. Let me grab that link for you...brb.

OK, this gets even better. Since the link is a pdf not a site, I'll give you Njord's excellent ads database link and let you enjoy that while you look over the info in the 92 parts schedule, about 6 down in the list. http://sportsbil.com/ads/

The parts schedule was provided by jdurbin1.

And don't forget to go back to the parent directory and look at the ads link to click on that photos link. Lots of this work has been done and collected. Here you go.

Nice work on the later models, too. Haven't seen lists of those compiled.

Bravo!

Minor stuff, The DeltaLab was an M1 not L1. There was however an actual ADS L1 speaker, it was the first one to use the clipped corner cabinets from Hados Germany. They were brought in (~'82) to match the first Atelier components and storage cubes. They only lasted a year and then the entire bookshelf line came in with that clipped corner cabinet style.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ADS-L1-Vint...ing-Sound-the-best-of-the-bunch-/201348681034

There was a second Delta Lab speaker also called the M1 from the early 90s. They were made from parts left over on the failed Frox project. The goal was to turn pallets of unused stuff into something sellable and blow it out through the dealer base. The 2nd L1 was a 2-way similar to the SAT6 except with a different triangular bottom grille and much simpler crossover. They were in dark gray paint like the MS10-12 subs and matched pretty well with those cosmetically. I can't find any pics of this M1 but they do pop up on ebay.

The other one is the AW4, there are 2 versions of if. I am not sure which is the most common but the speaker was sold for several years before the L210 came on. The first version had a plastic cabinet roughly L200 sized with a triangular back. The design language was the same as Frox. All of that was penned by Frog Design SF. The speakers fit inside a subwoofer enclosure carry case. The whole system was called Campus and was a sequel to the original 2001/2002 systems a decade before. Campus also ended in disaster leaving a surplus of unused parts. They were built up as non-bi-amplified speakers w/ passive crossovers to get rid of the excess. Before the name changed to AW4 a few hundred went out the door with CSAT (compact satellite) markings. Once those cabinets were used up the name changed to AW4 and I believe all the L200 style ones are named that way.

Several other car speakers as well from this period, 320i (iconic product), 320is, 325is, 325im, 336is, 336PX and several different subs, S8, and a DVC S10. You need to see price lists from the time for these as much of it was on plain paper only. Few brochures were created for them. Not sure what the L150e is, not aware of that model.

But, nicely done! I don't think there was a single bullet list on the ADS line out there.

@Blue Shadow - I've looked at some of the brochures from Njord's database but never realized there were pics too. That's great! Lots of nice ones of the L910s + stands I've been coveting.

@soundmotor - Thanks for the clarifications. I'll go ahead and update the list I posted above.

@thxdave - I'll shoot you a message when I have some time and energy to put something together. I'd love to make a single page with a pic for each of the pre-90s models.

I have price lists from 1981, 1986. Parts list from 1992. I copied over lots of files from sportsbil and the Directed Audio site (when the ADS content was still there). If you don't see something you are interested in on sportsbil, I might have it. Brochures, owners manuals, warranty cards, schematics. It's easier to hoard on a hard drive:)

Sure would be good if you would provide them to Njord Noatan (Sigurd) for the database. I sent him the 86 price list he has and probably some other stuff. Easier to send from a hard drive, too!!

What are the suggested scanning specs for printed manuals, brochures, etc? I have a lot of a/d/s stuff in my files and would love to help fill any gaps that might need filling. Also, are we uploading them here to AK or do they have to be hosted offsite?

300dpi PDF will be large, but yield the best prints.
300 JPEG will also work and be a smaller file. If these files end up being to large, then work your way down, 200 dpi, 150 dpi etc...

Great list, pjrey!

I'll add a little correction/addition here. The a/d/s/ MV20/u models that I have are a bookshelf version with the 2 x 7.75" woofers, but have the same 1.5" - 1" - 1.5" MTM panel as the MV80t. Acoustic suspension design.

Thanks for the hard work!

Great list ... wondering if my M9/90's would make it. And surprised to see my MS4 subwoofer made it.

I've seen multiple revisions to the amps on MS4's ... here's mine:
