Aiwa XP-Z3C problem

Scratch 'n' Sniff
I recently picked up a used portable CD/MP3 player that has a weird problem. First off, it has no line out (that's not the problem), only a headphone jack. When listening through headphones, the sound has a weird distortion to it. The sound is very echoey (is that a word?), and the music has a sort of distant quality to it. It's hard to explain. The strange thing is that if I use the cassette adapter to listen in my car, the sound through the speakers is just fine. It also sounds fine when piped through any of my receivers. The guy I purchased it from explained that it works fine for high impedence loads, like tape adapter or stereo inputs, but not for low impedence loads like headphones. It's obviously on the fritz. Can any of you audio wizards out there explain what the cause might be? TIA for any help.

Jeff
P.S. Here's a pic, not that it will help.
