Altec 19 Refurb project

Looking great. Why the opening in the risers?

Just to make wiring them simpler--I noticed a lot of people move the terminals to the riser or cabinet backs, but this seemed simpler.

I was going to leave the backs open and just do three sided risers, but I had some extra off-cuts and figured I would just leave a wire chase gap.

Decided to screw them in from the outside with deeply countersunk woodscrews.

Recapped and re-resistorsd one crossover last night.

Tested the pulls and most of the values had not drifted that far.

Not to sabotage the resale value of these beasts on a public forum, but some small community of vermin was living in these things at one point.

Need to do some serious cleaning or rip out the insulation and replace.

Recycled denim batt insulation. @Galaxie65 says GPA recommends it to replace the batt--IMHO the real bonus is that you don't have to worry about touching it without gloves.

Ultra-touch Denim Insulation--Home depot has a bulk box price of 6 rolls--unfortunately it seems like 7 would be the perfect number. I have one more on the way.

Seems like good stuff; I've used it in a couple of speaker cabinets and plan to use it in an Altec installation in EV folded horn cabinets. There is a recent debate somewhere on it, I can't find it though.

Dear god man.

Glad I ripped this out.

Almost tempted to chicken wire the port to prevent it from happening again.

Almost done with the denim.

Get a can of either krylon glossy clear paint or if you want minwax clear polyurethane which I have used both before . . And spray down the inside of the cabinet mostly where the vermin was living... This will prevent any other vermin smelling the urine residue that may still be in the particle board or wood inside.. . And thinking it's a good place to reside where their relatives used to!

Good info to know.
But unfortunately too late for me. I did give them a light bleaching and adhered the denim batt with 3M high strength 90 (and then redundant staples) so hopefully I have achieved a similar effect.

Glad you used bleach as a disinfectant, I surely would have advised a thorough disinfecting of the interior of the cabinet plus all the driver and wiring surfaces that you would be handling (hopefully with full nitrile gloves and breathing filters. Just can't be too careful with rat or mice poop as various viruses can be quite dangerous. I would consider spraying a nice final interior coat of disinfectant spray just to be sure.

Please check with the local health department where these resided before if they ever had any issues with rodent borne viral illnesses. I agree that some dark colored very open weave fabric or mesh could be attached front or back of any openings to prevent a recurrence - your choice on cosmetic appearance.

Getting close. Put the crossovers and horns back in. Need to pick up replacement machine screws for the woofers.

Fired these up. Pretty amazing. Even in my cramped workspace. I was going to post a video of them blasting some ornette Coleman but for the file size. That deep bass and the horns blaring horns.

Does anyone have specs and drawings of the baffle foam around the horn?
Lots of old threads mentioning an e bay seller but I’m seeing nothing.

Also if anyone has drawings or pics of the original grille structure. I might remake those.

Need to figure out a space to properly audition these.
