AM radio only works when I touch the antenna mount

I have a Marantz TA 100, and I only get AM radio if I am physically touching the anenna screw on the back

it doesn't even give me static otherwise.....dead quiet


I tried making an antenna out of a piece of speaker wire, but it made no difference

what is up with this thing?

FM works fine (??!)

Will need a very long piece of wire to get decent AM, FM is ok with short piece since the wavelength is much shorter.

For AM reception, you either need a long wire (50+ feet) strung up outdoors, or an indoor loop antenna like this:
