Amended list of 150+ wpc receivers!

EchoWars just did his thorough cleaning/setting/light-bulbs on an STR-V7 for me. He reports that it made 180wpc. Only mod was to add the by-pass caps on the big filter caps on the power supply filter caps. Here are a couple of nudies and a shot of the very clean front with that sexy green lighting.

Thanks vintagestereo, bully, and yrly.
I need to take the cover off this anyhow to clean inside, and a few knobs need cleaned (mainly volume). I doubt it's ever been done. With the volume knob at 3 it's loud, my best guessing it's close to 50-60 WPC. It has good sound, and was a very cheap buy. Thanks for your input.

Bully, do you work on equipment? I have a JVC receiver that powers up, but no sound (a thunk when you turn it on w/ very low output) Also need to fix a Kenwood amp with a blown channel. Someday I'll learn how to do these things myself. If you need model #'s send me a message, Thanks.

Stormseer - The 300W is the "power draw", not the "power output". I don't believe there is any possible way that a unit with a 300W power draw can produce 150 wpc. That would be 100% efficiency! Sorry, does not qualify.

-- Chris
This is by no means a set formula but generally a receiver output rating in watts is between 1/3 and 1/4 of the power draw. So 300watt draw means output probably falls in between 75 and 100 watts.

Bully: Since you're including digital units from the 1980's, I recommend that you add the Carver 2000 (200x2), Luxman R-117 (160x2), NAD 7600 (150x2), Sony STR-GX10ES (150x2) and Marantz TA-150 (150x2) and TA-165 (165x2) to this list.

Hello Everyone. This is my first time here and must say an awsome sight. I hope the experts can help me with this Fisher 2/4 Quad receiver I got from my brother as he was going to throw it away. I can't find anything on it. The model no. is 143.97650600 and the serial no. is 11287 and says it is a 200 watt power. I would appreiciate any help from you.

Thanks Scott

The list is arbitrary, I admit. I have included a few that stray into the very early 80s. 1980 is actually the last year of the decade 1971-1980 (ten years). Some models were made from, e.g., 1980-84, and thus can be seen as vintage, albeit at the extreme end of the era.
A list of high-powered receivers of the 1980s-1990s would be interesting, seeing as TOTL gear usually came in with some quality.

Anyone ever get information on a GTE 2600? I picked one up at a garage sale today. Really nice unit and sounds pretty good. Hard to find information on it though

Help?

Scott,

The model number you list, 143.97650600, is not a common Fisher number. Fisher made some units for Sears and they had unusual model numbers. If you post a picture of the unit, I may be able to help you identify it. I suggest you to start a new thread with a title, "Fisher Quadraphonic receiver, Help me identify"

as a former Marantz, Kenwood, Allied receiver owner, and still having a Technics and Pioneer SX-1250 in the house, yes they have a "whole lotta watts"

the reality is, you never get to use it- it's just an advertising WPC number, nothing more. If I cranked up my SX-1250 to it's full 160 WPC, it would sound like a distorted POS.

fact-take a digital multimeter, and check across the speaker output posts on one of those monsters at normal to moderate listening levels, you'll find that one only uses about 15-25 WPC on a good day, to get 85 dB in a listening room

above 85dB, OSHA requires hearing protection in the workplace- why listen to music at that level or louder ? another fact- most turn it down, then off, in a short time (typically less than one hour) due to dreaded EAR FATIGUE.

one good trait- the higher the WPC rating of a solid state rig, the better the first couple watts sound- i.e. more detail down at low-mid volume levels, in the normal listening ranges

but having said that, even the SX-1250 needs the treble boosted up, to even get near what my Akai M-8 dual mono tube amps will do with only 6 WPC

things that makes one go "hmmmmmm"....:music:

ps- I've seen very, very few solid state receivers, that sounded any good above 1/3 volume level on the volume knob- some can reach 1/2 way up and still sound "ok" but with distortion and ear fatigue coming on quick. Above 1/2 volume level, just about any solid state rig is unlistenable ! It just gets distorted as heck.

Hmmmm ... that hasn't been my experience.
That first watt is the most important, but it sure likes a couple of hundred watts as backup.

One fellow claims that the AKAI AA-R20 is 190 watts per channel. I think that it probably 95 watts per channel. Any thoughts on this model?

Cheers, Doug

The bose 1800 is rated for 250 wpc at 50 to 60 lbs, and the 1801 is much stronger and weighs about 80 to 90 lbs.

LOL the AA-R20 is all of 26 wpc.
The Bose are amps, not receivers, but are said to be quite nice and very powerful.

1978 Denon GR-555 rated 150 wps, sorry if this item was mentioned somewhere in the thread, I did not see it.

By the way, a gorgeous receiver with a fascinating front plate, but I sold it again because I don´t like those vinyl veneer woodcases in the upper class... to be honest, I hate that vinyl stuff!

Regards,
Chris

I just scored a Toshiba SA-7150 tonite on that auction site, will do local pickup, 2 hours away and well worth the trouble of not having it shipped. I am so excited to have my 1st monster receiver! It needs some work but was worth the price at $155.00 by far I think.
I'll put the money I saved on shipping into getting it repaired. Anyone else own one? What are your thoughts on it?

Marantz 2385

I know this is already on the list, just posting a pick of this wonderful condition new addition (crap that rhymes!) to my collection:

Gunny
