Man, I must have stored up some good karma, or something.
I was in a thrift store in south Atlanta today, and found ANOTHER Magnavox console stereo. This one, had the SE 6BQ5/EL84 stereo amp in it. And this time, it WORKED, just as it sat!
They were asking $44.95 for it, but I managed to haggle my way down to $24.95, since the turntable was gone. Like I told them, all I wanted was the amp and speaker drivers, anyway. Apparently, it had been sitting there for a while, so they went for it.
Got it home, pulled the amp out and I'm cleaning it up now. I think I'm going to do the same "resto-mod" thing on it, as I did the 6V6 amp... wood panels on the sides and front, 5-way binding posts for speaker outputs (in fact, this one actually has usable holes drilled in the back that'll probably take a twin-banana assembly as-is!), and a power switch mounted into the chassis, through one of the existing holes in the top (I have to remove a now-unused Molex connector, that rectangle hole looks perfect for a switch).
The model number on this amp, apparently, is 8601-10... anyone listened to one of these? From what I see, a lot of the full-range forum guys like this amp quite a bit. If it sounds anywhere near as good as the 6V6 amp, I can see why!
I do see that some people tend to mod this amp for DC heaters... anyone heard one in that condition? Sounds like it wouldn't be too hard to do at all...
Regards,
Gordon.
