anyone collect or have any boom boxes?

I belong to a group/forum of boombox collectors and was just wondering if anyone here had any classic models or collected them?

I only have a few that I really care about like my Aiwa CS-880 that I bought brand new back in 91, it's considered to be one of the very best ones ever made, some of it's features are a passive radiator, sealed speaker cabinet with all electronics mounted above the speaker section, digital tuner with 6 presets, Dolby B, and a tape deck section that compared to home decks, only thing I had to do with it was replace the tape deck belts, woofers were replaced years ago by Aiwa service center but tweeters and passive radiator all look and sound like new, few pics below:

here are my 3 Aiwa's, a 880, a 600 purchased from E-bay and a 210 someone gave to me

here are a few pics from past meets we have had , we have had meets in 2008,2009 and 2010 all hosted by my wife and I at the clubhouse here in Florida where we live, last year we had people come all the way from Germany and there was a professional photographer here taking pics for a book that he was working on, now published, this photographer is the one who took the cover pic on Time magazine 9-11 issue,

Let me guess... either Stereo2Go or Boomboxery?
Visitor from Germany... either Jens or Radiohier?
Come to think of it, I KNOW the answers already, because of the book! :D

I'm a member of both forums, Radiohier made it out to visit me here in Hong Kong a couple years ago (and Jens has invited me to stay at his place if/when I go to Germany again). I have around 100 rare and collectible boomboxes, including a few of the better ones pictured in your pics above. I have a couple that seem to be unique, they are so rare (one of which has an odd serial number that suggests a prototype). One had a single pic with no information in the database for years... until I found one in-the-flesh. I have one with a 12" CRT television in it, a few with turntables in them, and a few other oddballs --and of course, some Discolites, Lasonics, Conions, Sharps, etc... .

I don't collect much any more, because I basically ran out of room to store any more boxes, but I'll still pick up something if it is really "special" from time to time. I haven't been very active on the boards in the past couple years, either, but was more active for a while, a couple years before.

My last two acquisitions were a JVC RC-M90 found "in the wild" (my third), and a Sharp GF-9000 (my third or fourth) from the used-audio market, but these days I pass on anything less than that level of collectibility. I have almost every "grail" box, anyway, and multiples of some of them.

I'm still looking for a gold Marantz PMS-6000 that isn't a rebadge; mine have the original Marantz stickers and paint in the back, but were resprayed and rebranded in front. I want to find one that still says "Marantz" in the front and doesn't have any of the gold color painted over. So far, I haven't found anyone who has even seen one in-the-flesh that wasn't a rebadge; all the online pics I can find are of the same exact Marantz catalog pic, instead of actual snapshots from any owners. Even Radiohier, with his 600 or 700 (or whatever the number is now) different boxes, hadn't found one, the last I heard (He once asked me to sell him one, saying it was the last box he needed to make the collection "complete".). I've found several different re-sprayed/rebadged versions, but I'm not sure any more that Marantz actually released any under their own name, as in that ubiquitous online pic. There don't seem to be any, anywhere. But I'll keep looking... and that's the only boombox I'm looking for, any more.

I keep saying that I'm going to sell off almost all of my boxes and just keep a few favorites, and use the money to buy further upgrades to my regular stereo gear... but I keep putting off the selling part --it's not so easy to part with them! :D

Although long gone, this was mine back in junior high school. It's amazing to see how much some of the collectable ones go for.

I was a member at stereo2go first until Bobby got booted off and started his own forum, the meets we have are all from the Boomboxery forum. The guy from Germany name was ralf (not sure of the spelling).

I haven't purchased the book yet but thought it was cool that my wife and I's names are listed in the credits. The 3 meets we have had down here, the wife and I our the hosts, next meet is scheduled for this June.

true, some hold their value as well as the home audio equipment, I am rare as I am one of very few that still own the boom box that was purchased brand new with the paper work too.

I remember how many batteries those bigguns took...second mortgage for 30 minutes of play! Awesome meet btw, that looks like a blast! :music::banana:

first year and meet, 7 members showed up with 35 boom boxes, last year this is what we had:

Okay, here's the official list of stuff that was in attendance at the 2010 meet. We didn't break last year's record, but we did have 108 total boomboxes, 11 walkmans, and 8 pieces of other audio gear.

I like 80s boomboxes, however, they are hard to find in good condition. For that matter, I like anything electronic from the 80s, especially MIJ.

There's something about the styling of Aiwa, Yamaha, and Sony from that period that I really dig.

I had a nice Yamaha with detachable wood speakers that cost me 5 bills back in '84. I can't remember the model but I had it stolen in '86 at the Crazy Horse in Lake Havasu, Arizona while partying. Went on a beer run, had a friend watch it, he forgot.

EDIT: Model Yamaha PC-8, I've never owned another boom box since

Aiwa is my favorite, last year a bunch of members from the boombox forum found a black Sansui 3 pc boombox that was new or as close to new as you could get, still in the original box, all paper work with it and they took a collection up to buy it for another one of our members who had been looking for this particular model forever. He unveiled it at last years meet, needless to say he was very happy and surprised!!

I have about 395 boombox's and all but about 15 of them are for sale and I'll post a video of those that are my most desirables - Soon - that I wish to maintain.
Most of the rest of my Collection Can Be Seen In My Page on Youtube - here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/DecentMan4you

And Nearly All of them are for Sale - even some that i dont have a " For Sale " in the title or in the description. Please Inquire for those of you that may desire to own one of these boombox's and are reading here - Thank you.

p.s. here is the link http://tinypic.com/3ia1daw0 To my tinypic page for those that wish to browse my pictures there, G'day

I have a basic '90s Sony unit in my storage unit and a rather nice '90s GoldStar in het kitchen. It has an electrically-operated panel hiding all the unsightly buttons, remote control, a decent tuner and a CD player with DSP. There's fake wood decor on the top and fabric covering the speakers, I guess it's a deluxe grampa boom box.

I wouldn't mind having a nice '80s unit with LED bars, huge speakers and lots of knobs... but prices have gone up fast and nice ones are hard to find.

I have a kind of ordinary Sony with detachable speakers, 3 band equalizer, stereo mic jacks. Amazing how loud it can play. Seems to be a late 80's, early 90's model.

I also had many others. The best was a Sony with a rear firing super woofer. I remember it was not very tall, but was long and had diagonal running grill design on the left and right ends. Anyone recall that one?

Ive got a Telefunken Studio 1M, less the speakers (dammit), pretty impressive machine, I use it as my jobsite radio feeding a pair of Minimus 7. Even without the speakers, you wouldnt want to drop it on your bare foot.

I had a very cool boombox by Arrow (?) electronics. Had a slanted display on top with the VU meters and real condenser mics for recording. I was in the sixth grade and won it in a raffle at school. My best friend and I used to make make recordings pretending we were Howard Cosell and Dan Meridith announcing the super bowl games between our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys, who we loathed. I remember going out to buy Styx's Paradise Theater and Billy Joel's Glass Houses on cassette. Those two, along with Hooligans by The Who, were the first three pieces of music I ever bought on my own.

Must have been 1981.

I aggree I wouldn't ever desire to drop this on anybody's feet !

Well here is a view of the difference between the Radio Shack metal Framed little Speakers

and here is the woefully underspeakered - I'll just let the picture do the talking

Me i would prefer the Larger 5 inch woofer bass reflex 'ported' Optimus PRO 77
rather than the; 4 inch Acoustic suspension, Minimus 7 speakers
