Anyone else freaked out by supertalls??

Different kind of slicker here, I am a lifelong Los Angeles resident with the exception of a few years in San Fransisco. Maybe I watch too much Youtube but the Bigfoot, Dogmen, Little People of the woods, and missing 411's make me want to stay out of the wilderness.

I'm a suburban kid at heart .
I feel safe in the city.
I'd guess with some common backwoods knowledge , it's probably safer in the wilderness .
(I did some backpacking back in the day:rolleyes:)

For @SoCal Sam here's something from 2016 that drives the point home. 14% of all people who have EVER lived, live now.

@onepixel Well stated, sir. I would LOVE to visit the Big Apple, but I sure as hell would need a guide. Also, probably a gigantic Tommy Chong-approved apparatus to assist.

Having my daughter as a guide was crucial to get me going. It helped me get into the groove/mindset of NYC, quickly. I was starting to feel like a local and completely at ease. Go visit!

Recently an older friend of mine was lamenting about having to get a reservation for sun rise access to Haleakalā National Park. It's become quite popular thing and it's very crowded on top. He was saying that Maui should also have some kind of reservation system to reduce the impact of nearly 200,000+ visitors a month to the island. Maui's population is around 160,000.

I told him the population of Maui has grown over 30% in the last 10 years. In the same time period, global population has increased by nearly 1,000,000,000 people.

The original Blade Runner was set in L.A. in 2019. Scary to think about.

You can only summit Everest something like 2 weeks a year realistically only a few groups go and many times due to conditions many never get a summit opportunity.
For the lucky few that do.
They generally get 30 seconds or so then have to let the next person the opportunity to be on the summit.
For the record I had zero interest in doing that. I'm just comparing to the sun risr scenario.
Some things are just popular.

I didn't realize blade runner supposedly took place in 2019:eek:

Where's my Daryl Hannah replicant?

The animated signboards and multiculturalism are reality, the rest tbd.

Well, since this thread has turned into a referendum on NYC and cities in general, I'll throw in my two cents. I've lived all my life in the Seattle area and any chance I get I'm in the mountains or on the water. I love the solitude and quiet. Many "newbies" here fear the wildlife out there, but they do not have a reasonable understanding of statistics. This is truly a fantastic place to reside. That said, I absolutely love NYC. Seattle is big now and I've spent plenty of time in SFO and LA, but there is something special about NYC. I wouldn't live there, but as a place to visit it is unparalleled. I do not feel unsafe there, and crime rates are no worse than most places in the US, smaller towns included. I appreciate that it is not everyone's cup of tea. But for those who can tolerate big cities, the cultural opportunities in New York are unmatched.

More on the point.
High rise building have fire suppression systems.
Also fire stairwells which are sealed .
I once had to walk down 36 flights because of a fire on a building.
It does suck.
It would suck to walk down from 100 story penthouse

Not designed to withstand passenger jets

That looks remarkably like Times Square

I call that one the “middle finger” building—it dominates the sky in the window in our hallway. Mostly owned by transnational oligarchs parking their profits, and largely still empty. More are coming—welcome to modern New York City...

Not for me.

That's a lack of oxygen from lots of pollution and too many people exhaling.
That's funny.
While not as clean as the woods,
With lower vehicle emissions and no mountain range to the west to stop the prevailing winds, the air is actually pretty good. Much better than 30-40 years ago
