Audioscrobbler

I learned about Audioscrobbler on Friday, set up my own account -- http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/foetusized/ -- and spent the weekend playing with it. In short, you sign up for a free account (there are some extra features if you pay, but I haven't), and then download a plug-in for your computer music player (I downloaded one for the Windows Media Player). The plug-in transmits what you play back to their servers, which accumulate the data: for individuals, for groups, and overall.

It also makes recommendations for music based on what you have played, and what others with similar profiles have played. My list recommends The Pixies at the top of the list -- http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/foetusized/recommendations/ -- which is consistent with what I posted in the "Artists You Ought to Like but Don't" thread.

Anyone else have an Audioscrobbler account? If there's interest, we could start an AudioKarma group there, for members from here -- Foe

I downloaded the software a few weeks ago, but have not had a chance to get it up and running yet. I need to because everytime I start Itunes it asks me for my audioscrobbler information.

It sounds sorta evil... like the sort of helpful downloadw that we use Adaware and Spybot to delete from the computers at Casa Hardy(?!?)

Its all completely voluntary. No audio software comes with Audioscrobbler installed; one has to go download and install a plug-in. Also, the accumulated data is completely free and covered by a Creative Commons license. Everything is above board and visible on their site -- Foe
