B&O Remorse

Went by an estate sale today and they had a stack of decent looking Bang and Olafsen gear - Beomaster 2400, Beogram 3404 and Beocord 2000 tape deck. They wanted $350. Largely for fun and today is pay day, I threw out $200, thinking they would say no, which they did not do.

Everything seems to work fine, with some sticky buttons and burned out lamps, but otherwise in nice shape. TT in particular looks to be good and it has a cart and stylus. It's cool but worth the couple hundy?

They are worth $200 just sitting on your shelf impressing all your visitors...

I think you did pretty good, assuming that the gear is in good shape. I own a plethora of B&O gear (some examples of which can be seen below), and while it might not be the best audio equipment ever made, there's more to it than just a pretty front panel. Some of the models had materials issues, but these are usually easily dealt with, and there's some very good engineering inside their components. Not sure if you got a pair of speakers with it; their Beovox passive line is highly regarded.

Repairs shouldn't be terribly difficult; manuals for B&O gear are easily available online. All three will probably need new capacitors. The turntable and tape recorder might need new belts as well. If you need a new stylus, reproductions are available from SoundSmith, and there are companies which retip old ones. Some parts may be hard to come by, but most of what's likely to need to be replaced will be off-the-shelf components. I highly suggest joining the BeoWorld forum, as there are several B&O experts and enthusiasts who are members, and they are always willing to help. Good luck!

That 2400 is one of the best looking 30wpc receivers out there. If it works properly, it is a great piece for show-n-tell.

Here’s mine

Continuing the Scandi theme with the IKEA Poäng armchair, too...?

Bought an almost-new second-hand Pello chair and Poäng footstool the other day (for £25), and spotted a Poäng armchair for £20 today. Cushion was in a rather sorry state, so I passed...

I love B&O gear, but it is very hard to find someone who can fix a Beomaster 2400. It is very tight inside as well. I love their turntables though! Good sounding and very well designed. I haven’t had a lot of luck with the CD players and I’m looking for a local tech who can work on them. I have a CDX and a cd 5500.

Yup. That shot was in my Atlanta apartment back in 2015 when I was working on a Google project. Did the whole thing with IKEA. Especially affordable with the wife’s 15% employee discount.

Here’s some pics - thanks for all the responses! Anyone know how to change the belts in a beocord tape deck?

Cool.
As long as it works, 200 is "okay". (note: A total refurbished 2400 is asking price 135 euros (USD150) richt now in my country, bids is 100)
To replace the apparently burnt lamps on your 2400 volume and tone controls (if picture was taken when receiver on) have a good tech having done a 1900 or 2400 before.

If having to pay a shop, it will probably quite or very expensive, since this piece is a PITA for B&O newbies even if those techs are very capable, because of the mechanical pitfalls as
@BilboBaggins already states. There is chance of "collateral damage"also, working on it...

Thanks for pictures. Nice looking stuff.

In terms of value, the second and third posts in this thread are key.

Looks like the cartridge is missing from the turntable in the last photo. You mentioned having it in the first post, so maybe you just had it unplugged at the time, but it's definitely not installed in the tonearm. As far as belts go, you'd have to consult the service manual, which should have instructions. HiFiEngine has owners and service manuals available for the Beocord 2000 here. Good luck!

The cart is an mmc20EN. I took it off to safeguard the stylus while traveling. Didn’t seem like there was anyway to look down the arm.

Yeah, B&O was (in)famous for that. Most of the turntables they made were like that; when I got my first Beogram, a 3000 (one of four turntables they made under that name, another odd 'hallmark' of theirs) from 1974, I too was puzzled by the lack of a tonearm rest, and how it just 'floated' there. Never had a problem with it falling down when it wasn't cued up, but I can imagine it caused hassles when people moved the turntables around. Here's how B&O kept the tonearm from moving when it was originally shipped:

And yeah, the cartridge would've been packed separately from the turntable:

Not bad but not one of the high dollar ones. Looks like it has sold for $50-150 on ebay.
