When you acquired the BA-5000, were you listening to music via turntable?- I ask because if thats the case, then obviously you used the CA-3000 phono section. As you may realize, you can just connect a cd player directly into the BA-5000 and bypass a preamp altogether, that is, if a cd player is all that you want to listen to (as opposed to tuner, tape machine etc...) and use the left & righ volume controls on the BA-500, in which you'd find that the sound is very loud with just the controls on 2 or 3. No way the ears could stand it on 10!
The CA-3000 (and AU-20000) has a 3DB increment all the way around the Volume control, so at the midway pt, the db value is between -33 & -30 DB- as opposed to other preamps like the CA-2000 and all the Sansui AU amps which were designed to have the volume heard louder with less initial turning of Volume control-- notice that the -33..-30DB setting is closer to the 10 oclock position on the AU-717, 919 etc..
