Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

I will say, this did prompt me to go check my local GW again. Picked up to albums: Highlights from Aida (an opera I remember enjoying and figured highlights would help me remember and maybe prompt tracking down the full thing later) and Charles Ives' Piano Sonata No. 1 (I am a sucker for Ives and his idiosyncrasies)

FWIW, I am very partial to Leontyne Price' Aida, the one with Solti conducting, though if you can only find her later recording it is excellent as well.

I will keep that in mind when I look for a full version. I forget the version the library had (which is what I listened to in high school).

I do believe I scored this week at Value Village. I dropped by my favourite location on Tuesday, and sitting all by its lonesome, was a Kef 103.2! They wanted $25 for it. After inspecting the drivers and cabinet, I stuck it under my arm, and found a cart to put it in. Then I went back to the electronics section and asked an employee if they had its partner in the back room. He said no. Bummer!

But I wasn’t going to leave it, so I bought it.

Then, Thursday evening, I went back, and there, in the same place, was it’s partner. Same serial number with A on the label! It was only $10! Even better! I brought it home, and immediately hooked them up to my Sansui AU-9900, and they sound excellent! I believe I’ve found the speakers to go with my MA-6200 and the MCM console I have reserved for it! :trebon:

Cabinets look very similar to the Kef 101's I had a few months back, these look like a later iteration of that speaker, I bet they sound amazing.

They do sound amazing! And they definitely like a bit of power! They aren’t as happy with a 40 watt receiver as they are with 75 watts!

I almost bought a pair of 101s years ago, but I hesitated and someone else got them. I believe they are the same generation as the 103.2s and the 105.2s. I’m curious to connect them up with my 105s to see how well they play together. I’ve read they don’t go down below 60 Hz, but I was getting plenty of lows with the Sansui.

I hit a few thrifts today and got lucky at the last one.
Found 11 ECM titles, about 2/3 still in shrink for $2 each. I love Pat Methany and Keith Jarrett so I grabbed all of those. There were two artists I hadn't heard of but had supporting players I recognized so I picked them up too. So far I'm liking John Abercrombie and have yet to listen to Denny Zeitlin who's backed by Charlie Haden on "Time remembers one time once"

Got excited at the Goodwill Clearance today when I saw a realistic 8-track player / recorder box with the styrofoam... And no unit. I went on an obsessive hunt until I found it. Missing the record level knob, but I had a fairly suitable replacement in my spare parts. This should be a fantastic upgrade to my crappy little Lloyd's 8-track player.

Needs a new belt as the old one had of course turned to goo. Makes me glad of what I learned putting my reel to reel back together with that same problem. The belt was found on eBay for about 12 bucks and the unit itself cost me a whopping $4. The VU meters light up beautifully when a tape is in there.

That really is a terrific score! I have two pair of 103.2's, a minty pair and a beater pair. Read the first two paragraphs of the comments section of this review. I know of what they speak because I also have a pair of 105.2's.

Found a Yamaha AX-700U stereo amplifier on the curb sitting on a microwave(the night before garbage pickup). Took the cover off, blew the dust out.Connected some speakers to it and it sounds great! The best feature to me is the "CD direct" option. The only thing that's weird is when I turn the "Loudness" knob up to flat,,only the left channel gets louder but when I push the CD input button, both channels get louder and the Loudness knob is eliminated .

It wasn't White Van stuff , it was white SUV stuff .

"But your really need to take a look! It was a big install and we ordered too many of these Researched Audio amplifiers and JGL speakers so I can hook you up!"
