Bicycle Restorations, Builds and ...

those are just 2mm straight stainless, spoking 3x crossed both sides. due to symmetric spoking no difference needed on drive side, same lengths, same tension. But on 36L I guess I don't need differing on right side anyway.

Please excuse my stupid questions, but I`ve been out of the loop for quite a while, and have forgotten a lot of this stuff. Hard to tell from the photos, are those spokes flat, oval, round, double-butted, or ? What gauge are they ? Same cross pattern on both sides, or do you do like a 3-cross on the freewheel side and 4-cross on the non-freewheel side ?

Thank you, Sir....excellent job on your bike(s) !

Does anyone still ride tubular tires (sew-ups) these days ?

Yes, I have two wheelsets with tubulars for my Colnago. One Dura-Ace 1st Gen on Mavic GP4 and a Campa-Record-Wheelset.
I like best the rather hard to exactly place Conti Gatorskin 25c. Charm to ride. And - I love the work putting them on...bleeding fingers...

Very nice....my all-time favorites were the Clement` Seta 230-gram silks....they felt like nothing else, even the best long-staple Egyptian cotton tires paled in comparison. Pricey, though....

OK, here's one of my stable of 8 (or so). A chrome 1972 Schwinn Paramount. You'll notice some non-original parts; have all the original parts but the crank and rear derailleur is changed out so that I could climb some hills (the Nuevo Record crank had a 44 t inner ring on it!) It belonged to my father-in-law who died a few years ago but cycled until he was in his late '70s.

Your FIL must have been a tall guy (or had a long inseam measurement)....look at that headtube ! What is that, about a 25-inch frame ?

Yep, 25" P-13. He was 6'0" tall. It was common to size bikes this way years ago, so that the bars were about even with the saddle.
Grant Petersen has gone on at length about this over at the Rivendell site.

the only I don't like is the Regal... can't do about it, I just hate it

I have the Brooks Professional that it came with, but I didn't have time to break it in before the century I was riding with this bike.
The Regal at least pays homage to the Brooks. And I did remove the graphics.

:) thats what I don't like ... velour seat pretending to be a real one ;)
Brooks Professional (80s version) is my favorite. One of the problem-less-est seats for my ass ;) other is the good old selle italia Turbo

I`ve ridden both of those....IMHO, the Brooks Pro, with it`s big copper rivets, is at the top of the heap for all-leather saddles. Also had a Cinelli water buffalo saddle which was extremely comfortable.

I didn't see that the tape covering the seem wasn't installed center ... so when u start orienting in the tape while mounting the tyre you are lost ... u end up with a not center tyre. This was really hard to solve, eyes focuses easy on this... the visible edge next to the rim. There is no center line in the profiled area, so no help for the eyes.

These days, I take my wheels and go to Performance Bike and buy the tires and have them install them for free.

Ouch... found that seatpost of Schmidt slipping. Had a closer look ... it is a 26,8 inside - but I found 2 pieces of .1 thick sheet steel in the seat tube (one slipped deep into it...). **** - it needs a 27.4 seatpost! Crzy, because usually 531 is 27.2 - but this is lose. 26.8 with 2 layers of .1 wrapped fits snuggly. So I ordered a not time matching D-A seatpost in USA...

It arrived monday...after an odyssee even hitting Paris ....
