I had watched the Black Swan last week and yesterday a friend brought over the the RED Sparrow. I was really interested again at the sound quality that possible with a 7.1 sound system. There just a quality there that isn't often captured on CD and DVD of live Ballet performances in Stereo. Part of the reason is the Orchestra is smaller for Ballets and is stuck in the orchestra pit. But that said live performances are usually more closely miked and the mix isn't changed that much as opposed as what is rendered on full orchestra performances on CD. It just seems the movie sound people are more capable and have the financial backing to use better technology to bring forth the illusion of a live performance on the DVD format. Its a shame DVD-A never made it as a viable format. I realize there maybe valid arguments about tempo, musicianship, and interpretation, but as to the art of capturing sound those folks at ILM do a fantastic job.
