I really like box sets of different artists but I don't like when they put one out for albums that are easily obtained outside of the box set or they don't offer anything new. With that being said, what are some good box sets that are worth the price and offer some new material, like demo's, unreleased tracks, new mix, etc etc.
I listened mostly to rock and folk, but am always open to all genres of music.

I just ripped the Tom Petty Playback box recently, and it's a good one. The first few discs have the tunes everybody knows, but there are three discs of 'extras'. Great notes, too. Highly recommended.

Not sure if reggae is your thing, but the Bob Marley Songs Of Freedom is a gem. Great for those wanting only a single collection, but also great for those who have the albums.

Do you like Dylan? If you do the Bootleg Series has some great sets. The original one, plus Tell Tale Signs, and the Another Self Portrait one come to mind.

Not a boxset exactly, but getting this complete series kinda counts if you ask me, and it's an awesome collection of music. Not rock, but it gives a pretty good idea of where it came from.

"A Dot in Time" by the Books. They are kind of a found sound collage duo. It includes their four albums, a compilation album, a USB with digital copies of all of them, a DVD, and book. https://www.discogs.com/The-Books-A-Dot-In-Time/release/3710015

How about that Doug Sahm boxset released by Mercury in 2005?

That is what this company does. They usually get nominated for a Grammy every year for best box set.

I have most of them, but bear in mind a lot of the sets are collections of local artists or themes. Purple Snow has some Prince playing guitar when he was 16, there’s that White Zombie set with all their early demos, the new Hüsker Dü box, etc, etc.

If you’re interested in the crazy side of box sets, start there.

Grateful Dead Cornell 1977
A great set with the band totally locked in, recorded direct from the board by Betty Cantor.

Procol Harum, one of those great bands that seems to fly under the radar all the time. I don't know why - so much more than just "A Whiter Shade of Pale.' Some rarities, outtakes & alternative takes.

There is an instrumental version of 'Whiter Shade' minus lead singer Gary Brooker's voice. When they would appear on 60's British pop TV, this would be played while Gary sang live over top. If you're a keyboard player and want to know EXACTLY what organist Matthew Fisher was doing through the entire song beneath the vocals, this is gold.

If you're shopping for vinyl box sets, the Beatles Mono set from a few years ago is a revelation. The box includes a nice book and fully remastered copies of everything they did in mono.

Worth mentioning - a lot of box sets may seem to be a repeat of past performances, but in many cases are remasters and a big improvement of the original releases. Couple good examples are the Genesis and King Crimson anniversary editions.

A few I would recommend if you like fusion jazz would be from ECM.
John Abercrombie / The First Quartet

Charles Lloyd / His first recordings for ECM with a new pianist he just discovered Bobo Stenson.
