C 2 as a budget preamp or better options ?

I dare to challenge that with a Kenwood L-1000C  (except for its looks )
But the C-1 has such a historical legacy and unobtanium status that we got to have one :beatnik:
And it is good of course, after the necessary revamp works
Very interesting. I would probably never hear one either. Based on the looks and functionality, it looks to be more of a competition to Yamaha CX-1 than to a C-1.

Not sure I have seen similar opinions about the C-1....But now you made me curious about the Kenny

That's just one guy :p Anyway, I haven't heard a C-1, so I can't compare. But the L-1000C is very good (despite the looks).

Newbie entering into the separates for first time and need a budget preamp with a terrific phono section to mate with a M4 amp.

The phono section of the L1000C is terrific.
Reference: duly tested with a Sony PS-X9 turntable, Sony TA-NR1 power amps driving Pioneer S-F1 speakers.
At my buddy's place, as you can see here.
We have a lot best-of stuff amongst ourselves..... that L1000C being particularly good in the phono task, leaving us really impressed.
It takes a full system to judge whether one part of it is a good unit or not.
If the rest of your system is moderate, then one item does not necessarily make it shine.
But we all have to start somewhere :)

It is more than one guy....But I will have to take you opinion since I never got to listen to one. They seem to be more popular in Europe.

I still believe the better comparison would be to a CX-1

Woow, your buddy's place looks like a trap. U go in but you might never wanna leave.

Thank you for sharing:thumbsup::trebon:

Now, we need to get a restored C-1 in that place:D

Kenwood L-1000C; There are way too many electrolytic caps & opamps in the very long signal-path...even with relays.
A fresh C-70/80/85 should "crush" the Kenwood.
