I've done a fair amount of wrenching over the years including biggies like motor & trans swaps as well as all the basics and believe I am reasonably competent. You starting thinking about repairs in terms of time including how long work takes by yourself, a dealer, or mechanic. My refs just got reset.
With that in mind I got a call Sunday night from my wife and she is ~5 minutes from home pulled over (with a carload of groceries). Her car is a Focus and the dash lit up with essentially a *** DO NOT DRIVE - TRANSMISSION FAILURE - YOU ARE DOOMED *** message. I asked if it was making any noises prior to that and she said no. I told her to bring it home and she did without issue. Monday morning I called the dealer and told them it was coming over. They said they were jammed and would not get to it until the next day. I then called AAA and arranged the tow over. About 20 minutes later AAA was there, wow! Tuesday ~9:30 the dealer called and said it needed both clutch discs as well as trans control module and other bits (all under warranty). I'd noticed the rear brakes were noisy and asked to change them as well as the oil. I forgot to ask the agent the ETA (but figured 1-2 days and was blown away when at ~2:30PM he called and the car was ready. We went & got it later that evening.
Frankly I am amazed at the speed they executed the clutch disc replacement as well as rear brakes & oil. At the minimum it required driveline removal on one side and cracking the transaxle case from the motor. Taking out the mechanic's lunch break and pulling parts for the job they completed this in ~4H. Once again I am reminded why division of labor works so well and also why I farm out big jobs rather than tackle them anymore. Better late than never...
