Cassette Deck Repair in Detroit Area?

I have an Akai GX-F90 (bought in '79) that I believe (deck won't rotate cassette) needs new belts. I tried to disassemble the deck to gain access to the belts, but the drive mechanism is buried pretty deep and I didn't want to remove any parts that would prevent me from re-assemblying correctly.

I have a couple of questions:

1.) Is it worth having it repaired? Or should I consider purchasing a new cassette deck? The only reason I want to have a cassette is to be able to record some of my albums for longer play sessions down in the man cave.

2.) If it is worth repairing, are there any local shops in the Detroit area that can tackle a job like this; at a reasonable rate?

3.) Amazon has some TEAC and Pyle cassette decks on sale. Any comments on TEAC and Pyle quality?

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions.

Not sure how good your Akai cassette deck is.

I've had pretty good luck with Morrell Electronics. He charges $40 to look at it.

Thanks, I dropped it off at Morrell Friday after work. He claims he has a lot of common cassette recorder parts. Quoted ten days to two weeks.

I don't think $40 is too bad to look at it, I was just quote $72 somewhere else and I would have had to ship my Yamaha. I'm goona give em a call.

Gave Morrell the OK to repair it and picked it up yesterday. Hooked it up last night and recorded my first LP, Jeff Beck's Truth, tonight. So far, so good. Replaced a drive idler pulley, two belts and repaired the tape transport. Owner said that these vintage, '70's, cassette recorders are pretty robust, should last another 30 years. :D

What was the total charge, if you don't mind my asking.

It was $151.32 for parts and labor. Expensive repair? Yes, but I consider my stereo equipment a hobby and probably could not replace this deck at that price. Plus, I rationalized that I recycled a stereo component. :D

I dropped off my Pioneer CT-F9191 at Morrell and nine days later here it is.
