Cat tree/scratching post project planned. Suggestions please?

I was going to buy one these do-hickies, but I am really disappointed with how they're arranged and they look very cheaply made. The cheapest one I saw was $120. It couldn't possibly be worth more than 5 cents. I have a chair that the cats have torn up that might become part of it. Yes, I will post pictures. Anyone have some suggestions?

Four-inch round post, wrapped with 5/16" sisal rope. As tall as you like. Add a platform on one side, half-way up, and another at the top, maybe with low sides around both. Cover the platforms in short-pile carpeting. A sample would provide enough to do one platform..

Saw one of these, about 7' tall. Cats loved it. If the sides around the platforms are a few inches high, they can hide in the 'box', and peek over the top. Privacy for sleeping, and great fun when awake.

Roughly 18" x 18" baseplate, a couple of feet of 2 x 2 mounted vertically in the centre (nice beefy screw up through the bottom). Then wrap the upright post with non-synthetic rope, which you might be able to get (free?) from a stable, a boatyard or ships chandler.

Done.

Ernie beat me to it, I was thinking about it too much :D

...and, the redneck comes out of the closet.

First off, thanks to all for the suggestions. My choices were limited, but this is what I have so far.

Round posts weren't an option because of the base and square ones were all I could find. There is one more picture coming once I get a chance to take it. I sat down to rest for a minute before cleaning up and 2 cats were on my lap. So, when they get up, I'll clean up and take the picture and post it.

The building inspector showed up and checked out how it looks so far. He approves. :thmbsp:

Here 'tis!

A nice young man gave me some carpet. So this is what I ended up with. The red thing behind it is a grill table I made a few months ago. I had to position this perch in front of it in order to get a good picture. I might take more pics of it at night in its proper place.

That's cool, bet they like the vinyl area.

I kick myself for passing on one of those tree looking ones in a thrift.

I know I'm late to the party but berber carpet makes an excellent scratching post material. Just staple it to a 4 X 4 and let your cat have at it
