Direct TV is the spawn of the devil.

Next time I see him will get the info, unless some else knows. He got a used SIM card that was from Verizon years ago??? Evidently when smart phones first came out this card had unlimited internet for cheap. Lifetime!
A short lived promotion!

He got a receiver to plug it in to and gets his programing à la carte.
No worries about usage......

My eyes glazed over when he was explaining it. All I was hearing was somehow this has to be illegal.....

Screw DTV!
I had them for over 15 years.
The bill slowly went up year after year.
It finally reached a level I wasn't happy with.

Many years ago, the reason we all got into cable and monster satellite dishes was to have the ability to PAY to not see commercials.
Somewhere somebody forgot about that.

Anyways, I saw DTV offering a brazillion channels for $24 for new subscribers.
I called them to ask what the deal was.
I asked the lady where the payoff was for loyalty?
I explained that I should be getting my service for $24, and the new guy should be paying the $120 I was paying.

She said, it doesn't work that way.
I told her, yeah, well guess what, now it doesn't wok at all!
Come get your shit, I'm done!

I kind of went through this kind of crap with Dish Network years ago. When I bought this house here in Pittsburgh, I wasn't living here for any amount of time, and Dish was just the cheapest option for basic TV service. So I signed up for 2 years, which got me a free install and equipment and a decent price--cable in Pittsburgh is expensive.

After 4 years of no problems (but I wasn't here a lot), I started having reception problems, so I called for service and this idiot told me it was probably a transponder module and drop-shipped me a replacement part (for free), but I had to get up on the garage roof and install it. OK--no biggie--I got ladders and know how to unplug a module and plug the new one in.

Didn't fix the problem, so I called for service. I was told there would be a $100 service charge to send out a tech--WTF? My two-year contract was up and I was responsible for any equipment issues, since I was no longer under contract. Next phone call was to ComCast.

For 6 months, I was hounded by customer service calls every week--trying to get me to come back. Nope--no way in hell--all you needed to do to keep me was send out a tech and calibrate the dish--that ship has sailed...

We get our internet through Comcast, and that is a pain in the butt itself. Not a company I like to deal with, and not the most reliable of net connections.

Now that gaming is not occurring in our house I am thinking of switching to the hot spot option of a cell phone plan for net service for our puters. When I had Verizon I was able to get enough data through a hot spot to where we could watch Netflix with no interruptions. We now have unlimited plans on Sprint, so I am not sure it will work as well. If it does, it sure would be nice to eliminate Comcast all together.

Cheers
Mister Pig

You should verify the hot spot plan is truly unlimited. Most aren't and have a per month cap. 100GB could be marginal with a lot of streaming.

It's not only telecoms that pull the price upping game. I've had a self storage unit for the past 4 years that started out @ $179.00 per month and is now $239.00 per month. It's a brand new unit, I was one of the first 25 renters. Absolutely no upgrades or improvements have been made to this location but yet rate has gone up every year and always mid-winter, cuz they know you don't wanna move your stuff then.

My wife and I have had that conversation about customer loyalty. I've been with T-Mobile since it was originally Aerial cellular so that's what...22 years now? When I questioned the "Customer Sales Specialist" about why I pay more than a new subscriber they began down the garbage path of bullshit excuses until they finally came up for air thinkin they had my tired old ass completely baffled. So I told the rep. "I see, so because I have fulfilled my contractual obligations to you people I would like you to close my account, return the money you debited from my account yesterday, because you charge for service in advance now, and then I'll be back in a month to open a new account to take advantage of the new member lower rate and get 2 new phones. Then we'll do this same silly little game in 2 years when the phone is paid off...or you can make adjustments to my current account and save us all some procedural headache, either way I'm retired and ain't got nothing but time to wreck your day and looks like you got alot of customers in your store now.

Account got changed to reflect new pricing, was thanked for my loyalty, told to have a nice day and then kinda shown were the door was.

Good one.

Cable tv cutting was my solution. So 200g Internet from Spectrum, and Hulu for tv watching. There’s also a Netflix account, but the fam shares, so it amounts to a few bucks per month extra.
Total is $110/mo for all.
Here’s a kicker, Spectrum is expected to offer streaming soon, which looks to be half the cost of Hulu. As a long term spectrum customer, I expect to be able to sign up right away. So deduct $22.50 from the $110 when that happens. I also expect they’ll package internet and streaming for one price. I’ll see if that’s the best option when it comes around.
I am in a city, and internet service is pretty consistent, so streaming was a good solution for me. Some other areas may not be as connected for this type of service.
The old bill was $225.00.

At one time many years ago I had 600 channels of satellite TV and yes you can have 600 channels and have nothing on.

I never had DirecTV but the way they jacked around with people and how I heard people who had it complain and saw what they were charged Dish was really the better way to go. The only thing better about DirecTV was was the TV Guide.

The only reason I got such a good deal from T-Mobile was at the time the wife and I were looking for a replacement for Virgin and T-Mobile was offering 55 years olds and over unlimited data and all the other stuff that comes with a phone for 30 bucks a month including taxes. 60 bucks for the both of us was a great deal and I won't change it if I don't have to.

Mexican, Carlos Slim, along with American television host Larry King, established Ora TV, an on-demand digital television network that produces and distributes television shows including Larry King Now, Politicking with Larry King, Recessionista, and Jesse Ventura Uncensored.

From 2010 to 2013, Carlos Slim was ranked as the richest person in the world by the Forbes business magazine.

Current figures estimate that at least 44.2 percent of the population of Mexico lives under poverty. Of those, 33.7 live under a moderate state of poverty and at least 10.5 percent live under extreme poverty.

The rich get richer and the poor get digital TV...

Been with Dish for the fourth year now .. very satisfied w/ them but my contract (promotion) 2 year (after previous 2 yr) runs out this November .. so I'll probably switch again. Was thinking about switching to Direct TV but I'll probably take another route.

Previous experience I had w/ Direct TV was not that good  .. that was a good many years ago though.

Netflix just went up in price .. but I get enough use (so far) out of the service to justify the expense.

Don't worry--they'll figure out a way to "fix" that for you (actually for them).

Cable tv is a ripoff, from whomever you choose. Price goes up fast and keeps going. I'm paying 180 something and it'll be rising (it is cable, phone and internet however). Electricity rates going up 24% soon. It's closing in man, closing in...…………………………..

When we had a land line a couple decades ago our last bill was $65. Now my cellphone bill is cheaper. When we had cable/satellite we watched maybe 10 channels regularly so we didn't see the value in it anymore and until there is a la carte ordering I won't consider cable/satellite. It's surprised me what you can cast from your cellphone to the TV.

Iowa is just as bad as Illinois if not worse for cost of living and taxes. Retirees pay nothing on retirement income in Illinois it's only SS in Iowa and Iowa has inheritance tax Illinois it's over 4 million before that kicks in. When we were looking for a place to retire to Iowa was a sideways move from Illinois. Kentucky is much cheaper than both.

I usually use humor so those who cannot read into my humor - this is humor.

it's a pitched battle between the executives and the American Middle-class. with
numbers like 100million, just a dollar a month extra is ONE BILLION per year
(my perfect example is gasoline prices in CA, 1 extra dollar times 30 million cars per day
and gas is up to $2 per gallon cheaper in states with NO refineries)

there are thousands of vice presidents making millions (that's billions) coming
up with schemes to simply get you to pay more. in spite of there being dozens
of cell phone companies (like the sub-contracted MVNs like Cricket, etc)

my cell phone number was originally Sprint decades ago, then they
up the rates, and NOT available to existing customers so I moved the number.
I also had a business phone with ATT and I needed a phone that worked overseas.
I was lied to by the ATT person about the Windows phone he was getting MASSIVE
bonuses for. didn't know it didn't work till I got to two countries where it failed.
two weeks - no phone - was reduced to buying an international calling card
and using public pay phones.

you want a cheap cell phone? use T-Mobile's legacy Pay-as-you-go SIM in
the (unlocked) phone of your choice. you can still buy these accounts on
ebay. cost? one $10 fill-up keeps your account live for one year. then add
minutes for your outside on-the-road use.

it's ironic that ATT with their plastic-encased cheap phones no longer work
on ATT because they killed 2G. these 2G phones still work on GSM networks
in about 100 countries and on T-Mobile.

then when you're not on the road, use Skype. free.

I am waiting for the giants to jump in. FI, a good start, good for US/overseas
internet, calls, SMS, and above ALL - roaming. all the big guys charge you
for a specific overseas country and the minute you step off a plane in a 3rd
country, and your phone auto-downloads email, you are SCREWED.

whoever gives me what I already have at a cheaper, better, faster rate
get my forever business.

somewhat funny story. I was at a buddy's house who uses DTV/ATT
and I used my phone with a hotspot to my laptop. my download
beats his DTV connection. he switched that day.

but before you switch, try your LTE phone as a hotspot and compare
to a hard-cable connection. and of course, NO ATT (can you wait
for clear skies, no rain, no snow, no hail, and no 18-wheelers in sight)?

if you really want to shut-off the well-rehearsed retention spiel,
ask for a VICE PRESIDENT to ask (then have that VP send
you an email with details) for the best deal. they won't
be able to find one. they're all out at the Bay Area's Benz dealer
(off 101 just outside Oracle HQ), jammed into the 20-foot doorway
looking at AMR GTs. in ATT colors of course.

that ATT VP can email me or post here with his best deal. and
if it doesn't require a shareholder meeting, he may be able to
single-handedly triple the number of customers. and
he can do it from his GT convertible.

one of these days, cell phones and service will be free, with
internet, and streaming music/video right behind it. it will
take someone very smart to realize the media owners
already get paid by subscription, by download, by view, by
service provide, by ads, by everything. there are about 3
reasons then the lights go on.

I threw the satellite dish in the trash and cut the cable line a long time back. I went with Antenna for my TV and netflix for movies via the DVD plan. i did use a internet service for several years and at first it was ok but as time went on it got very bad as far as service. It was supposed to be a 12meg speed but it got down around 3 or 4 megs line speed. I could not even play any of the online games I played at that time.
After much calling tech support and the company upgrading their servers and lines. The speed got back up to 12megs.......... at last. This of course did not stop the increasing cost of the service.. It started out at 56.00 and soon got to 70.00 per month. Still the service was good with all the improvements and I felt that 70.00 per month was not a bad price.
And the price kept going up and up and up until I was paying 112.00 per month for 12meg service. I started looking elsewhere for services that provided internet and I soon found out that the company that provide service in my area is what is called grandfathered in..... means no one else can use the land lines..... old landlines for phone or internet/cable tv service. Only the company that has been here for several years.
So to make a too long story short. I found out about cell phones with hotspots. I checked with several providers and talked to several folks that I know that used it and they were pretty happy using it. so purchasing a smart phone (cheap one) that had hotspot capability AT&T. I can now get 8Gigs high speed data (45.00) per month. speed at 70 to 80mps plus I can add 3Gig of data for 20.00 giving me 11Gigs of High speed data.
Now that works for me real well as I do not spend as much time on the net as I used to and I do at times have HS data left over that will roll over when my plan renews. However for the sum of 65.00 per month I still have internet, unlimited calling, unlimited text and can surf the net from my phone if I'm so inclined. even my laptop works on it.

If a person is looking for an alternate way to save a few bucks and they don't spend hours and hours on the net its a alternate worth looking at. It has saved me aggeravation in dealing with idiot CS people and about 45.00 in cost plus if I take my laptop........ internet anywhere I go

What irritates me most about these companies (including my ISP) is that not only do they not value and reward their long-term loyal customers, they try to screw them over at every turn. I have to keep on top of my ISP like flies on sh**.

The only thing I miss about cutting the TV cord 3 years ago is daily Seattle Mariners baseball. I looked into MLB.com, but they have the Mariners blocked out for me even though I'm 500 miles from Safeco Field! :(

No more dish/directv for us. Switched to antenna for local and got a few apps on the appletv box. We use a mobile hotspot for internet. Saving over $120.00 per month. No more paying for hundreds of channels that were never watched. The hardest thing to get used to was losing the DVR. I miss that DVR.
