S.Pak...Apologies for the delayed response, I've been preoccupied by 'real life' concerns...having a busy season, which is nice when contrasted with the alternative...
Yeah, they're not perfect, nor the means of recording them. Tiny mics in small 'point 'n shoot' cameras are hardly kind. But I wanted to get Something 'out there' to refer one to if only to show that, well, Damn, they actually do work. *G* I could post a static pic and just dub in a straight audio feed and BS everyone, but for the sake of mere honesty I'll 'fly the flag', warts 'n all....
They do display the 'oddities' inherent of an omni...hard to separate the speaker from it's surroundings. That, and they're admittedly crude which is what is the driving force behind the next version. Better 'purposely selected' drivers (robust, vented), improved cones (lighter), a better surround material (Santoprene), CNC'd structures with higher tolerances, and a generally improved 'look' (less DIY 'steampunk' *L*). Still an experimental venture, to be sure....but it amuses me and keeps me out of bars.
I've cast positive and negative forms which will hopefully allow forming the cones less of a chore. I've been playing about with creating a small roll-forming tool as well, as the ones available can't go small enough for the top ends of the cones, nor are they capable of dealing with such light gauge materials (2 & 5 mil). Getting the tolerances and alignments correct before the adhesives set up is driving me to make jigs to enable that....
I was once asked if this was just a hobby or something that was drifting into an obsession. I suspect it's become the latter, but I'm fine with that. *S* I can tell you and anyone that cares to ask that listening to something that you've created vs. bought is terribly satisfying. And the desire to make it/them as good as one person can manage on a 'shoestring' budget is very compelling....
BTW, when you have multiples of them you can get them to play surprisingly loud. I can force the amp that drives the speakers you've watched into thermal shutdown. It used to be the other way, cooking voice coils. Progress of a sort....
One thing I'd like to do is to make an appearance at Parts Express' yearly meet just to get some RL feedback from some peers. There's no audiophile clubs in my area, no 'philes in the area that I've met or aware of. I'm considering reaching out to the folks at Moog here in Asheville, since they're probably the only 'critical listeners' available....and I'm a deamau5 fan, which would be appropo listening material (complex synth stuff). Lure them over with some decent beer....and cheeze...*G*
Other than YouTube, I can count the number of people that have heard my little mutants on my hands...and I don't run out of fingers... Only 2 could be considered 'fi folk', and not what I would consider 'critical listeners'....impressed by what they see and hear, but not 'deep' in analysis of such. And that's what I'm desiring now...feedback in situ.
