The 1218 started production with metal knobs, but just like the 1219, ended production with plastic ones. Oil the motor, clean and oil the platter bearing, replace the clutch tip, lemon oil the base, lightly sand the idler wheel with emery paper, oil the support pin, and enjoy.
 
The only problem with Lemon Oil is it doesn't last. Something like Watco Danish Oil Finish or 50/50 mix of Boiled Linseed Oil and Paint Thinner will last a long time
