After waiting what felt like a lifetime I finally managed to transport my SX-1050 from the west coast back to the prairies. It was roughly 2 months in the making but I managed to not damage it. Took the front panel off and cleaned up all the knobs and face plate and dusted out the insides and I can confirm the unit I purchased is indeed virgin and not abused in any way. No burn or scorch marks and absolutely no signs of prior tampering. Short of a couple of slightly bent switches and a scratch on the faceplate by the tone switch that the unit is working perfectly. Been playing some for the past hour or so and no heat issues to report on. Unit looked like it lived it final days with the previous owner in a woodshop or garage as it has sawdust all over the front of the unit. In any case I didn't even have to Deoxit the switches. All switches and pots work flawlessly. Sans the scratch on the front panel and nicks and dings on the wood case overall the unit is not bad at all.
Although I've only been listening to music for roughly an hour or so that I can say for an original 40+ year old ampler that it does WONDERS to the sound. Not too laid back or warm but not clinical. Separation and detail is very good and it has a bit of an airiness to it. It will be very interesting to see how the 1050 will sound and perform once I've given a new set of caps and transistors.
Would you folks recommend that despite it working perfectly to only change the caps or SHOULD I change the pre-amp transistors as many have suggested along with a few resistors? The insides LOOK new but obviously with 40 year old caps that there is bound to be drift.
Thanks!
