Gain control on a KA-9150

I'm sorry to be so damn dumb, but I'm working on a Kenwood KA-9150 and don't know the purpose of the 3-level gain switch on the front panel. Since I don't have an owner's manual, I have to go public with my ignorance. Can anyone explain this to me?
Thanks
John

Allows for finer control of volume level at low volumes. Or if you need to drop the volume briefly for some reason (someone is trying to communicate with you, or the phone rings).

It's simply a convenience feature.
