Live and learn.....some of us are honest .
It works. Glad to see at least one person read my novel about the Noah / Hallo-Fi Electronics disaster. What I also wanted to point out, was that because of the extended time (90 days +) for the whole transaction, people cannot even leave negative feedback to this guy, on the site. They have 30 days only. So of course, after that, this guy goes unoticed, and continues doing business as usual. I just spoke to the site, and they have no provision for this kind of problem. Nice.
I have absolutely no experience with this business, but I too would be very hesitant to send $ up front on any sort of service work whether it was my stereo, car or washing machine, or remodeling my kitchen.
There are some great technicians at AK. Unfortunately at least some of them are backed up from here to Venus, and for good reason.
Do you know any in DC/MD/NOVA area ? I need to take my freshly "restored" G22000 in for service.
wow - that's nuts. i do computer tech work, and without being a braggart, i'm pretty good at what i do. still, i get paid after work is performed. if parts are required, and you're someone i don't know or don't care to front the money on, then those have to be paid up front, but my labour is always on the line. it's sort of a guarantee of service...or it keeps me honest, or whatever...i stand by my job and expect to be paid.
so far, i'd say, i've had a remarkably easy time collecting from people......although i deal with local businesses, as opposed to ebay purchasers.
anyway, after that rant on the last page, i'd stay far away from that guy - sure there's plenty of folks around here who'd love to help you out....probably for less, but idk
There are audio groups on Facebook where he's showing off the rebuild thread for that sansui receiver on his website to get more new customers. Now we have a look into what actually happened behind all the nice pictures and verification report...
Closest good guy is member whld1610 AKA Bob up in New York. He's on vacation this week and made a delivery on his way down the coast, maybe you could hook up with him? I was very sorry to hear of your troubles. I had mentored Noah a bit at the start of his vintage stereo repair business and was on vacation when the first signs of trouble appeared then he dropped communications. Very sad. We need new techs to come up in this business as us old techs are fading out. Sad to say there aren't many places teaching electronics these days and not so many jobs as manufacturing has continued to move off shore. Also a very sad situation!
I aint fading Mr. Buckner!
Noah restored my KA-8300. Best sounding piece of gear I ever owned after the restoration, flawless!
Randy,I appreciate the referral!
I'm actually delivering some units I restored to akrs along the way while on vacation here in the Smokey mountains.
Nothing quite like free personal delivery!
I'll also be happy to make some pickups along the way home.
When was it restored JC? This year or a few years ago.
I believe the issues that come up with this guy involve mailed in units from far away.
One day its going to happen to the wrong guy, and he's going to snap. You know the guy, Someone that's on the edge. The quiet type that doesn't have any friends....
Thank god I restore my own gear, I was that guy who was going to snap 4 years ago on a local shop!
Nobody likes to get screwed. . Not giving a crap about the next guy, does not mean the next guy does not exist. This lack of vision gives the offender a false sense of entitlement to something that isn't theirs giving the offended party a chance to smack em upside the head when nobodies looking.
There is no rational way to understand how people can take advantage of others and live with themselves, but there is understanding for those that will lower themselves to the bottom, in order to get back what is rightfully theirs to take.
I have no use for thieves. I am not saying this guy is one, because he never burned me, but i have heard enough stories directly from victims that accuse him of things that are hard for me to believe.
There is always someone that will complain about service and problems. Stuff happens and it not a perfect world. I am guilty of dragging ass and screwing stuff up, but i never was able to make money and equipment vanish. I was never good enough of a magician to be able to turn someones pride and joy into a piece of crap that i found in a corner. Nope, these stories are either true, or there is a shitload of people from around the country that decided to lie about the guy just for the hell of it.
I have seen this many times were a guy has shown enormous talent in the past, and had a goldmine of friends that will no longer loan'em a nickle.
The sad part is that there is no positive ending., the decision to take the wrong road always ends the same way, a trail leading to nowhere.
This coming October I will start my 30th year in business doing electronic repairs and I've never taken money before a repair is finished.
There are many people that are great technicians and there are many great business people but It is very rare to find someone that's great at both.
Noah was what my father used to call a "no problem" guy. The answer to every question and every request is always "no problem" but everything always ends up being a problem with these guys.
My mentor used to say that "only guilty guys hide" and doing business on-line is the perfect place to hide now-a days. When you can't get a call back within 1 day, it should be a warning sign that's something is wrong
Having a flashy web site is no substitute for knowledge and integrity.
What Chris said.
I would never make payment upfront for a repair on anything. I did provide parts once which went in the guy's brother's car! Lesson Learned, and I have never done business that way again, Just my advice for a stress free transaction.
And then when they get called out they use the "quit picking on me" approach, either be honest or don't do the work.
The only time I take money is for parts, I tell customers up front- Pay for parts first then labour once it's complete. I was burned once paying for parts out of my own pocket- never have been burned since.

Before you send your gear to Hallo-Fi, consider what others have said in this thread.
