ran accross a pair of heathkit speakers today,8 inch woofer
and a horn, sound really good.anyone else have a view on heathkit speakers?

Most had quality drivers sourced from Altec, EV and JBL. Usually had well-engineered crossovers (sometimes a bit too fussy IMHO) and well engineered cabinets. If you can find them that haven't been neglected, they are a great find.

Nope, the one's he's talking about have Utah drivers: The P8R (IIRC) AlNiCo woofer and the RP-103 AlNiCo horn tweeter in a plywood bookshelf box with a shelf "vent". These systems had a couple of different Heathkit part numbers. EICO had a speaker that was similar if not identical.

I have a really ugly pair in the basement. They do sound good (although mine had been crassly re-woofered when I found them, but I have re-re-woofered 'em with EV LS8 fullranges).

Heathkit used drivers from a variety of OEM sources. I've seen a pair with the classic CTS cone tweeter and a CTS 12" woofer. Always seemed to be good-quality parts, in any case.

Regards,
Gordon.
