First: I am new to the world of electronic repair but have a love of old stuff that often requires repair.
Second: I have a great brother-in-law.
My brother-in law came across some old stereo equipment at a house he was working on. He gave me two Sansui pieces because I have a Sansui r30 that I played in the shop all the time and I was looking for something vintage to run my Technics turntable and my 80s vintage AR bookshelf speakers with. One was a 661 Receiver the other was an AU5900 Amp.
When I opened up the AU5900 to clean it I noticed it had two blown fuses and capacitor goo around a few caps on the Power Board 2596. The other boards looked clean and there was no additional evidence of bad capacitors or resistors.
I ordered new Nichicon audio quality capacitors through Digikey and replaced most of the 50V caps including any near the leaking capacitors and both 6A x 250v fuses. After the replacement the 6a fuses still blew as soon as I turned it on.
When I disconnect the leads from terminal 20 & 21 the fuses do not blow.
I left only 7 of the original caps: the two 3.3uf x 50v ones at position c612 and C613, the four 1uf x 50v caps and a single 10uf x 16v cap.
I have ordered the remaining caps for the board and will replace them this weekend, but I fear I am in for more work after this.
Are there common issues on the Sansui AU amps that cause them to blow these 6a fuses beyond the local (PB)capacitors?
Thanks for any advice and experience AK friends.
