The 299 is the right tube amp to look at, IMO. Tube rectified with sound just as engaging as the MC-60. I have three of them, all restored. Agreed, $1,500 is steep. If it was showroom mint with wood case, you would overpay at $1200 but you would not be sorry. I realize that not everyone is DIY. I bought all three of mine in original but good cosmetic condition and with wood cases for around $400-500 each. Restoration parts and misc. tubes add $200 to 250 and then there is your time which in my case is free because I enjoy the process. Your time may be more valuable which represents the premium you are willing to pay.
