Hi Fi Hearing Aids

going to audiologist tomorrow for hearing test/evaluation. then sales pitch for new oticon H-aids.
will see how it turns out.
I am down about 70-85%. cant hear any car beeps or microwave beeps or much if any
common household sounds. I just want to hear my sound system and the tv is all. do not care
about talking in noisy environ or crap like that . just person across table from me. and must last the duration without
having to get new ones every yr.
VA tells me expect ca 6 years, more or less depending on care and damp.

I don't wear hearing aids but my better half did. The most important thing for her being around sound systems and guys who designed sound systems was finding an hearing aid technician that not only thoroughly under stood his products capabilities but the desires she was after. Tailoring the frequency response was just the first step. Being able tailor the gain and more importantly the compression and limiting to prevent to much background noise increase that masking the sound of interest was the most important setting. Her frequency response curve basically was a dip not an extreme roll off like most folks. So once the dip was partially corrected and the amplification matched the natural sensitivity of the ear which wasn't linear, then a little soft limiting was all that was necessary. It look half a dozen or so visits to get the setting to her liking. But with out the fact that the tech, she and I could communicate about what she was after and what he could achieve, I don't think she would have ever been happy.

So I went to an audiologist about a year ago due to my declining hearing. She had me all set up and was more than happy to sell me the top of the line models. I was shocked at the prices, I went online and did a little research. I found this online and was a bit skeptical, sent off a couple of emails, he set me up with an audiologist about 45 minutes away. Saved me a chunk of ducats and I am very happy with the results! No affiliation with him, but I would recommend him. costco membr. is $60/yr NOT $35

My Bernafon Juno 9 aides cost about $2700 for the pair at COSTCO. I checked online and they were going for about $5500. $60 a year is a bargain.

Ouch ! big money .
In Uk . us oldies [ 70 ] get free hearing aids , due to childhood high frequency hearing glitches .
Way back when I never knew this so my system was geared to minimising the low frequencies which are subjectively LOUD to me !
My brain seems to adapted to seeing , with problems actually LISTENING .
I can 'hear' accents when watching TV with subtitles . Weird , but it's about watching mouth muscles I am told .
Most of my 60s LPs are mono 'cos I had a mono record player and mono opera / classical LPs were cheaper second hand
Headphones are fine for listening to music .
Just optimising my system for a new record deck after a decade of CD only ,
dee

Our insurance company gives us $400 every three years toward the purchase of hearing aides. We've been trying to get that $400 since last February. Today they said our money should be here within two weeks. I'm not holding my breath.

My octicon alta pro 2 were $7000 a couple of years ago and my insurance paid it in full. I was lucky. Then a mon the ago they stopped working so Octicon sent me two brand new ones. Not refurbished.

All I can say to the OP is I wouldn't cut corners. There are some things that you still get what you pay for and in my opinion hearing aids are one of them. After 45 years of playing in Rock bands I broke down and bought some 4 years ago through a local hearing specialist. Yes, it's expensive. Mine were 5k but batteries are free for the life of the aids and all check ups and adjustments are n/c. I could never trust a audiologist that works in the same place that they sell cereal in bulk.

Still pretty cheap for the benefits. I held off for years and joined when I got some money from Dad's estate
and we bought a nice largescreen HDTV there ...parking sucks and I hate the crowds,
but for occasional large purchases its worthwhile.

I bought my pair from Costco for about $2500... half of what the local hearing aid specialists were selling them. Costco has really upset the hearing aid business.

Yes they are overpriced... because anything labelled MEDICAL automatically gets doubled/tripled/quadrupled in price.

If you do decide to go, here is what you can expect at the clinic-level https://saywhathearing.com/en/hearing-loss/what-to-expect-at-your-hearing-test

Hope to pick up my brand new Audibel A4i today. Have been wearing Starkey Halos for the past few years but they're dated and it shows. Besides the fact they've quit working they're due for replacement. 6 grand out the door but that includes sending the Halo's back for repair/refurbishment and lifetime f/u visits. The Audibels have a user adjustable equalizer program for music. That was pretty cool to play with and yes it made an amazing difference in how much music I could hear. He had a pair I could try on and play with for a while to see if I wanted them. No way I spend that much without a test drive first but it only took a few seconds. The iphone app is amazing in it's ability to tailor the sound with the Audibels and miles ahead of the Halos. And the Halos were top of the line a few years ago when I bought them.

And I just spend almost $4000 for new speakers and can't hear them for shit. Even the wife feels sorry for me and yall know how rare that true sympathy is. There are some things in life that are truly worth spending the money for. I can afford it right now and it's an investment in the most important part of my musical enjoyment.

I'm a Costco member and wouldn't consider them for hearing aids.
