I got my Sanyo pcbs and heatsink plates.
I still think a surface mount version could be done
with the objective of get to get it into the Sanyo package size and
pin config.
Then you could just R&R them!

I suspect both failures are likely to be more common ones, had thought about mix & match but I think I will hold off on that project for the moment. I do miss having that beast working though!
