Here is a link to a cloud service that has a project I did last year to include some 40 odd consecutive pics on the correct procedure to take out the transport in these Nak decks, and replace the idler tire and belts. There is a pic keyed 2 page instruction also. Hope those of you with these decks find it useful. It is read only, so I suggest printing the pics and instructions in case the cloud service dies.

Here's something I don't get...when I view the folder from my home page, the pics are in order. But when I click the link, they are random..WTF? Any experts on this kind of stuff? Thanks for making it a sticky, Bigerik!

Well done ! Now thats what we need more of.
Any chance you have any drawings or pics for the belt layout on a Nak 580 ? I'm sure on everything but one. After splitting the sandwich I didn't realise there was another belt hiding behind the back plate and it somehow dislodged itself without me seeing how it was placed. It comes off a pulley from the same shaft as the counter pulley and thats about it. I can guess but prefer to know for sure.

The 303/505 don't have a counter belt, one reason their W&F tends to be a skosh better than other belt drive standard transport Naks. The counter belt goes between the counter pulley and to the take up reel table. The pulley is part of the reel table stack and physically is right behind where the beauty plate would lie. The supply has the same pulley as part of the reel stack, but it is not used.

Ok. The "beauty plate".. now thats something I would have never guessed. I just called it a back plate. So what your saying is that the other belt from the counter pulley goes to the right side reel stack only. I see now, after having looked at it again, this provides drive to the secondary mechanism. What threw me initially was the fact that both reel stacks have the groove and wasn't sure how it was originally configured.
Thanks so much for taking the time to clear that up. Cheers

    Idler retread

I saved your pics. I am getting ready to go after my idler, just did the belts. Thanks for doing all that. I still have to do it here on a Kenwood deck I set aside.

Since I purchased from one guy before noting another guy selling just the rubber for the idler, and tips, I wanted to ask here first.

To replace the idler rubber only, can it be accomplished just by going in from the front without removing the deck?

The deck is playing beautifully behind me on my bench. It only runs overly fast at intial play or after an auto reverse before slowing to normal speed for play.

    I figure, idler wheel typically.

I am not interested in a complete rebuild, just going after this idler. If it is just behind the beauty cover, it would seem I should be able to get it.
    Let me know
    Thanks
    Jeff

NM, I see now the idle is just forward of the circuit board, aft of the full faceplate.
Looks like some close work coming up.
    Thanks

Hello, does anyone still have Perry's pictorial? I tried all the links in this thread, and looks like they are no longer working. Much Appreciated.
