Hey, Im in Okinawa, Japan visiting my parents for christmas. I found an old akai reel to reel in a thrift store. The model number is GX-646. I just recently got into vinyl and am loving that but dont have any experience with reel to reel. The guy said I could have it for 10000 yen or about 90 us dollars. I might be able to talk him down though. He originally said 700 bucks. Should I buy it? Is this a good price? It seems to be in really good condition and comes with the reels. Thanks for any help you can give.

I also found a pioneer sx-730 turntable and an akai ap-m313 turntable. These any good? Or is there anything I should look out for while Im here? Thanks.

The Akai R2R was near TOTL for Akai's consumer decks of that era, and was very very good. Akai made their name in R2R equipment and they made some awesome consumer decks. Of course, it all depends on condition, and I'm not one to say if the price is good as I'm a sucker for anything that says Akai on it.

Hi
i read, that it is a 4-track autoreverse, and thats why it shall be not as well sounding as not autreverse. its tricky to adjust heads too. Its not totl du to this lack, a 2 track w/o autoreverse would be the better choice for the sound. The comment i read says its so a very good consumers r2r deck.

I'd be very suspicious of such a huge price drop from $700 to $90....:scratch2:

Hey, I know a guy who would give you a nice profit, and I also know a guy who can fix it if there is anything wrong with it.
