Couldn't find a thread on this type of music so I thought I'll start us off with my latest LP purchase.

The Atlantics - Bombora from 1963.

I saw Dick Dale play at a tiny venue in Morgantown, WV in June of 2005 - I think there were 30 people there. After the show, he came out and signed autographs for us - I was the only one who brought an LP (a GNP Crecendo pressing of classics re-recorded in the studio in 1978). He told us about the pic on the cover as he was signing it - way cool!

This compilation does not have "Hava Negala", but everything else is there and played at a faster tempo than the originals - much like his live shows. Dick Dale is the master!

A band that is less well-known that I can highly recommend is The Madeira. They are semi-local, being founded here and they make it back routinely. I've seen them five or six times.

Good, good stuff. I'm a life-long fan of surf and it's what inspired me to start playing guitar (The Ventures and The Shadows, mostly).

If anyone is interested, I'd start with Carpe Noctem. They have two or three songs from each album on their website.

So flipping jealous! I only have a couple of Greatest Hits collections of Dick Dale.

I think I need to watch Beach Party again (though Beach Blanket Bingo is my favorite as I'm a big Buster Keaton fan, even the stuff he filmed in the course of a weekend ;) )

Which reminds me, is there any love for the Del Aires of Horror of Party Beach fame?

That's East coast surf music. :p

I am currently keeping my eye open for any and all surf music, particularly surf guitar instrumentals, so this thread interests me. I suspect no list could be complete without mention of Link Wray.

surf music is timeless. I use to book bands for local pool parties. They were family affairs, so getting a band that would appeal to all ages was critical. We always tried to get the Danny Morris Band, Danny knew the surf genre and played a wicked '57 Strat, actually had his very own surf music program on the radio.
Man would the little kids get out there and dance like they were tripping. That led to the moms getting out, then everyone would be dancing. Fantastic memories.
I'll have to pull some gems out this weekend. Thanks for the idea!

Great thread.

The Chantays - Pipeline LP in glorious monaural is a trip. Big thick sonic vibes.

And blessed reverb.

Link Wray's an all-time favorite of mine, his stuff is great. He's actually got a lot of variation in his music, he had some stuff that sounded a bit country, the surfy twang, and even some pretty straight forward rocking out (Big City After Dark).

Anyway...Henrietta - The Trashmen.

"Instrumental Surf Music! This site focuses on Instrumental Surf and related Instrumentals only. If you want to read kind words about vocals, you will be dissapointed. There are other places on the web for sissy music with words. No lyrics sung here!"

Thanks, that's good information!

Speaking only for myself, the only surf music I will be buying will be located at a thrift store. Can't afford anything else. I'm sure someone can make use of those links, though. I'll check out the forum you mentioned.

60's:
The Avengers VI: http://youtu.be/CtujUdu3ZcM
Davie Allan & The Arrows: http://youtu.be/KHZ1VP_ZBWI ( my favorite version of Apache. Shortly after this, Davie Allan went on to become the king of "biker rock", which is really just fuzzed out, tough surf rock.)

Modern (80's- now):
Man Or Astroman?: http://youtu.be/ezZXLQTQw3U
Phantom Surfers: http://youtu.be/5-5tybL8PSo

Speaking of Dick Dale, he used to play every New Years eve in my hometown. I'd go with my dad every year, until Dick had to stop due to health problems. He was always awesome, but his band could just never understand how surf music is supposed to be played. It ain't rock music!
