Interesting challenge: Help me put together a Craigslist speaker/amp combo for less than $300

I've had Highboys and OLAs. No disrespect to Advent, but I was quite surprised that the Highboys were so much better. Does your fil have room for speakers of that size?

+1 on highboys a) if they fit b) all drivers work (there are a lot of them) c) you can recap (made a big difference to mine)

The Klipsches and DCMs are much more likely to be ready to go. Since they are at the upper end of your budget, I'll mention that the Klipsches will run great with a cheap chip amp. They are about 96 db sensitivity IIRC.

Based on specs and reviews, I'd pair the Yamaha A-S301 running in Pure Direct with a pair of Large Advent loudspeakers. The sound and volume of such a setup would provide "perfect" background music for recreational activities/socializing. Having recently used a Marantz-branded Denon NR1402 in such a mode, I can attest to the fact that two-channel playback sounded very present and spacious without having to jack the volume sky high or fiddle with tone controls/EQ. Quite a few receiver owners find the mode in question gimmicky, but I love it and am quick to activate it on equipment containing it as a feature.

Morel looks interesting. I am a big fan of textile dome drivers. Those should be good with a wide variety of gear from receivers to high power pro amps. See if you can get him down in price. There is no sold history on ebay.

Thank you, those Bostons hadn't even hit my radar as a good model...I'll message the guy.

That looks like the best thing posted so far IMO. And if you don't like the sound of those speakers go get the Tower speakers Mr Light posted a link to.

Yes, that one is definitely my preference - looks clean and well taken care of, nicely considered. Dude's not responding to my e-mails though. :(

I've also realized that Culpeper VA is pretty far out there and any seller willing to meet halfway or deliver them would be a real advantage.

I think I have the solution. The guy who is selling Pioneers (which seem well regarded on the forum) offered to include a Nakamichi RE-1 receiver and a Pioneer CD player (one of the big ones that holds like 30 CDs) for $200, delivered to Culpeper...and the convenience of that is definitely worth something! I want to pick up something today so we have a couple of days to tinker with it before I leave for home.

I have no idea of the lay of the land back there, but if delivery works for you go for it. Based on the shine of that floor I'll bet the system will work pretty nice.
Good luck!
