In my TV room I have a TX-NR809 AVR. It's been pretty reliable but is starting to act up but not in a way that follows the pattern of the typical dreaded HDMI board problem.
According to many YouTube videos I've seen on the problem, when you power the AVR on and it warms up initially, you never hear the "click" you're supposed to hear after a few seconds and the speaker icons never appear on the display indicating what speakers are getting power. My AVR is doing something very different.
When I first power it on, the Display reads TV/CD and below that it says T-D and there is sound but only through 3 of the speakers and the icons for those speakers are lit up. Then you hear the click and the T-D changes to All Channel Stereo and all the speaker icons light up but now there is no sound from the TV. If you go into the sound calibration setup, you can get sound to come out of all 6 speakers in the 5.1 setup so all of the output channels do work.
Occasionally, I've been able to get the thing to provide sound when it clicks to All Channel Stereo if I've unplugged the AVR for a few minutes and plugged it back in again. If I try to switch the input to my Android Streamer box which is connected through one of the Onkyo's HDMI ports, it only shows me a blue screen and does not display the output from the Android box. If I then switch back to the TV/CD input, it will no longer give me any sound on any speaker. I have to unplug the AVR and let it sit a few minutes before I can get sound back but I don't always get the sound back when I do that. I may have to try it several times and then all of a sudden I have sound again. It's really hit and miss.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this with an Onkyo AVR? Any ideas as to what I can do or what the problem might be? I tried a Factory reset but it didn't help. As I was typing this it occurred to me to do a Firmware update so I will try that. Any other suggestions other than trash the thing and get something other than an Onkyo?
