Is this Pioneer Pl-518 worth it?

I have the opportunity to buy a Pioneer PL-518 for around 35 bucks from an antiques mall. Looks decent, probably some TLC, a new needle and I would be in business.

Is this a good deal? What year is this? What's it's features.
Ebay is off the hook with 200 starting bids on this.

I have been eyeballing various Technics and Pioneers for a few weeks now, this seems pretty good but I want some opinion here and if needles are good to come by and upkeep is nice. Totally will make up my mind in two hours if there feedback here is fast enough.

Thanks!
Phil

Check eBay "Completed listings" and see what they sell for. Don't forget to add $30.00 or $40.00 for shipping.

IOW, it's a very good deal.

Got it

35 and change, sounds good, spins well, original needle too that isn't half bad. Here is pre-cleaning picture. Any replacement needle recommendations from here would be appreciated (low to high levels)! I am pretty freaking excited!:music:

Excellent find!

Unable to identify the make and model of the cartridge from your pictures.

What is it? :scratch2:

Great find. I see them on Craigslist here for $150-$250.

Nothing new would touch it for under $600-$700.

Thank you all for the encouragement and help! :thmbsp:

I guess I would look for a low end cart around 20-40, and something in the 70-100 range for swanking it up later.

There is a discussion (and comparison with a Technics SL-D2) about the PL-518 on AK here http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=466901 , as well as other DIY refurbishment threads here http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=473889 and here http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=333152 . The main problem with them seems to be the feet, on which the rubber falls apart, but the DIY articles show how to fix them – it is an easy fix. There are probably other articles on them if you do a search.

It was a very popular direct drive turntable from right in the middle of Pioneer’s range in the late-1970’s, with a heavy wooden base. It cost about three quarters of the price of a Technics SL-1200MkII, and unsurprisingly wasn’t quite as good for performance or features (no quartz lock or tonearm height adjustment, for example), but did have the advantage for home users of being semi-automatic (auto return at end of record). However, it’s a very solid and reliable model that was a very good performer, and as millions were sold, spare parts should be available – you may be able to find a broken one to use as parts. Pioneer back then had very good turntables that have stood the test of time. Even if you have a problem with it, as so many were sold, you are almost guaranteed that the answer to fix it will be on forums like this.

The cartridge is Pioneer’s PC-135 http://www.vinylengine.com/library/pioneer/pc-135.shtml , and should be a reasonable match with the tonearm – the correct tracking weight to use is in the 2-2.5gram range. The replacement stylus is widely available from places like LPGear http://www.lpgear.com/product/PIR026.html or from eBay sellers such as Carole’s Needles http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEREO-NEED...rd_Player_Turntable_Parts&hash=item2eba09b3e6 – just about anywhere really, as they were very popular.

As Balifly said, an upgrade to a better-sounding cartridge could be made easily. One that has a recommended tracking weight in the range 1.75-2.5g will be a good match with the tonearm.

Id say you did well for the price. As far as carts and styli go, I have a pl 518 and I like the shure m91ed on it. I currently have that and a shure hitrack styli which seem to go well.

One thing I would recommend that you do straight away with that table is put better quality rcas on it and solder direct, makes a world of difference in sound on that machine.

So great on this back story and help, much appreciated!

Decent table, I have the 514, belt drive version, I love it. I run a Sonus Gold Blue on it. I veneered it and it looks as good as it sounds now. At that price you really have a nice deal here.
