Some love em, some hate em. But who doesn't love a Mary Jane? All may be gone shortly and the hoarding is in full swing as The New England Confectionary Company is running out of time to find a buyer. Fans of the wafers, which have been in constant production since 1847, are up in arms and feverishly scooping up the coveted discs in copious quantities:

    I love em!

The Wall Street Journal has some quotes from non fans describing the flavors as “Tropical Drywall”, “Plaster Surprise” and “Attic Citrus”.

Not all that coveted, or they wouldn't be going out of business.
It's an advertising world and I can't recall ever seeing advertising for them. If you don't advertise you fade from the common consciousness never to be heard from again.
Now if we were constantly bombarded with these wafers glued to the nipples of topless models... That would convince many how good they taste.

Haven't had a NECCO in decades, but I do like them--maybe I'll look for some at the local grocery store today. I would expect that they will find an investor, since they also make the Valentine hearts with all of the "sayings" on them. Maybe all of the free advertising of their eminent "failure" will create a resurgence of demand just due to nostalgia--what I saw on the news last night showed a 150% increase in sales already, and Ebay listings for absurd amounts of money.

Those were some of the most disgusting tasting things I had as a kid, they were not missed and will not be missed LOL

I WILL miss Clark Bars though, those kicked ass

    You must be at Milliways.:D

I was finally able to stop eating them by the use of intense meditation, introspection, sheer will power and determination, although much like my audio addiction, I told myself that I could quit any time I wanted to.

I have a very long history with NECCO wafers, I was eating them before the transistor was invented. I believe they tasted better when listening to tube powered audio. This may have had an impact on my addition to both...

I think we as a collective (AK) should buy it, repackage it, and keep it going!

    Never was a fan.
Hard to believe they lasted this long.

A lot of things I did like went extinct a long time ago.

There are "vintage" candy specialty web sites.
Who knows, maybe they will live on.

They still exist and are made in Pittsburgh, PA--Clark Bars and their sister Zagnut (no chocolate, but coated in toasted coconut). Might just be a regional thing, but they are still here.

Years and years and years ago, when I was working for a small biotech company in Cambridgeport, we were just a few blocks from the old NECCO plant. The plant was still in use, at some level (this was very early 1990s). Some days, depending on wind & meteorological conditions, the sweet smell would waft over our parking lot. A happy memory.

For the most part I didn't like 'em, but I did like Clark bars, one of my favourite American candy bars.

I never liked Necco Wafers, but I do like Mary Janes. Got to be careful of those Mary Janes though, they'll rip your fillings out.

I like Necco wafers and they also make nice exploding air gun targets. During WWII there was a shortage of workers at the General Radio Corp. plant, and a shortage of sugar. The Necco girls saved the day. See page 51 here- http://www.timeelect.com/GR_History.pdf

Like them or not, vintage or not, a good online campaign focused toward the young generation (campaigned as vintage or retro) in addition to hip, modern packaging could revitalize the brand!
