Okay, here's my soap box moment for the day. Just a word of seriousness if I could. This may or may not be the best thread for this, but oh well. I saw this picture and thought I'd make a post about it.

Hummingbirds make their nests relatively close to the ground and most often they make them in household hedges/bushes. However, due to the noise of trimming them, you'll either prevent them from nesting in your bushes because of that noise and/or the lack of unmanicured cover, or you'll scare them off their nests completely once they have established themselves, never to return once they are gone. They are susceptible to the noise of hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed trimmers, edgers, and other noisy lawn maintenance machinery. Once they leave their nest, they never come back. Even if they have eggs or young chicks in them. They are mostly found at the edges of forests, in orchards, and in household gardens. What I'd suggest is to learn about what species of hummingbirds live in your area, learn about their breeding habits, and try to accommodate their breeding season. It's always best to learn about and be mindful of as much wildlife in your area, and try to be respectful of their existence and their right to breed and feed as they please.

Given that humans are everywhere within the habitat of hummingbirds (and countless other animals and important insects), it is our duty to assure that we try to live in harmony with what's remaining of the living world around us, and to assure that the animals that decide to use our properties to feed and reproduce have a place to do so. There could be a reason why they have chosen your property for these things to begin with, because they may not have the proper habitat to do so anywhere else. But once they are scared off, or their habitat becomes damaged or lost altogether, their ability to thrive suffers and their populations continue to decrease. It happens everyday with countless species of flora and fauna each day. In a world dominated by human activity, try to be stewards for our little animal friends who can't do so for themselves. ;) :) *steps off soap box
