This is special for me . . .

I attended this show in 1978 and recorded this concert onto cassette about 3 weeks after the show off of a radio simulcast on WXRT Radio, Chicago called "The Unconcert" with my Wollensak 4765 Cassette deck I bought new in '76. Cobham was touring with his new album "Magic" at the time. WXRT connected their tape deck (have no idea what the unit was) straight to the soundboard. Sounds incredible after 40 years!

Merry Christmas everyone, and Happy Holidays !

So many great posts recently ( & past ) on Bob's thread here, it's like a fusion encyclopedia !

CB, glad to see the the belts spinnin' on that cassette deck...hi-end cassettes are now making a strong comeback onto the market, both in US & Europe...not kidding at all,...following recent reel machines taking over world audio shows last couple years with new machines made now. Soon we may even see some new cassette machine models emerge on the market, yet our vintage hi-end ones are phenomenal in fidelity. Checking around, we now see brand new recorded albums (current) being issued today on cassette tapes to buy ! Cool to keep all formats spinnin' & glad the young generation tunes in.

WEATHER REPORT fans...Wayne Shorter will receive the Kennedy Center Honor award, show filmed to be broadcast Wed Dec 26th at 8 pm EST CBS.
    ***********************

Highlights include "Elegant People" performed by a band including Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci, Alphonso Johnson, Brian Blades, Terri Lynn Carrington, Alex Acuna, Esperanza Spalding & others. That should be something to hear, respectfully without late Joe Zawinul.

Santana & Donald Fagen (who had Shorter on Aja album) also on a clip tribute to Shorter, who I think is in a wheelchair as they all commemorate him.

So, for Wayne Shorter and the holiday season, here are (3) Weather Report songs...

From 6th album, Black Market, here is Gibraltar, a track posted here by lotsa folks many times (me before I think also).(1976). (7:47 length).
Please first ADJUST VOLUME AFTER time stamp (1:19), then go back to play beginning thru, to protect gear from volume jump at that stamp.

On that album = Zawinul-keys, Shorter-sax, AJohnson & Jaco Pastorius-bass, NMWalden & CThompson-drm, DAlias & AAcuna-perc, but on Gibraltar (& more tunes) = CThompson-drm, AAcuna-perc with AJohnson-bass. Many know CThompson from Zappa & Genesis. Gosh, what hasn't he done, work with Santana, Phil Collins band, even a Caldera album, among a long list of others - riveting to see live (saw him with Zappa, they played nearly 6 hours that night).

Next up, from the 3rd album hugh breakthru for the band, Sweetnighter (1973) played here in full album length (44:39) are 2 WR songs that 1st attracted me,
opener Boogie Woogie Waltz (from 0:00 to 13:06) and 4th track 125th Street Congress (starts 22:07 time stamp with length of 12:16). Bought this album in 1973 and certainly defined a sub-genre of jazz-fusion inflected with "world music", like no other artists, still reigning in that category of fusion. Accolades to the late great Dom Um Romao who captivated the audience on this live tour; previously posted here extensively about that overwhelming experience, a concert etched in my brain, with Romao greatly responsible.

On that album = Z-keys, S-sax, Miroslav Vitous & Andrew White-bass, Eric Gravatt & Herschel Dwellingham-drm, Muruga Booker & the great Dom Um Romao-perc in possibly his greatest recorded studio performance.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays fusioneers !
