joshvito's small listening space

How are things shaping up for you here in this room Josh? Been a few months.

Question, do you sit at the desk much if at all?
I use the desk almost daily, unfortunately. :/
I don't have any more space to separate my office in this house. This factor is one of a couple that will have the wife and I moving in the next year or so.

I upgraded the room a bit over the weekend, and wanted to document the progress.

I spent the last few months building a mid century modern console clone. If you are interested in the progress photos, I have an Imgur gallery and a Reddit help thread (with links to video).

Over the weekend, I moved the furniture around to accommodate the new larger media console.

Here's the before shot. Sorry about Pugsley, He always wants to be in the photos.

After some furniture moving, and a little help from my wife, I ended up with the following configuration.

There has been an addition to the gear family too, a new Marantz integrated amp.
So far I am liking the Marantz sound with the B&W bookshelfs.

I still want to look into some bass traps as mentioned earlier, and my wife has plans to upgrade the furnishings (e.g. lamp and curtains); I've made room in the closet to store my desk chair while listening too :)

Current Setup (Gear
  • U-Turn Orbit Plus (Grado Black Cart. Acrylic Platter)
  • Bellari VP130 Mm Tube Phono Preamplifier (Stock Ruby Tube)
    • To be swapped for Tungsol 12AX7 Goldpin
  • Marantz PM6005
  • Bowers & Wilkins 685 S2
    • bi-wired to Marantz
  • Yamaha CR420
    • Hooked up as a tuner at the moment
Thanks for looking.

Looks good. Great job with the console.

You going to move the TV over to above the console? There's even room for a bigger one.

What are your opinions on the U-Turn Orbit?
I like the Orbit a lot. It's simple to set up and use. I will say, I avoid the 3 or 4 45RPM recordings I have, because I am lazy about moving the belt. The table has a solid, well manufactured feel, and produces a clean sound for the price. IMO, it delivers in the entry level TT category.

That was the first thing we hung in the room, I couldn't tell you the last time it was on. If I were to go through the trouble of patching the wall (2 holes and 4 lags), I'd probably not even bother with re-hanging due to lack of use

Yeah, might be more fun to run it as a monitor for the computer so you can see your streaming or media manager info page good from the couch. Music videos etc.

Nice work, you have a very inviting setup. Love to hear the B&W's.

Funny the Pet Sounds LP you have in your earlier posts. I see it mentioned in almost every SACD, DVD-A, XRCD review as a wonderful sounding recording.

Thoughts?

I grew up listening to a lot of Beach Boys music as a kid. They were one of my parents favorites. I was even in attendance at a few concerts in the 80's. Pet Sounds is my favorite Beach Boys record, and probably in my top 10. You could pick some of the surf songs or the car songs (who doesn't like 409?), but Pet Sounds is a bit more complex but still fun. I may be slightly biased because it reminds me of being a kid, but the harmony's mixed with the short love-ey pop is perfectly organized and sounds great.

I guess I didn't really answer your question. Maybe it gets a lot of hype because it is Bryan Wilson's most known album and the reviewers are not as familiar with the Beach Boys catalog?

There is a new development in the plans for the listening room.

We are removing the rugs in this part of the house in favor of laminate flooring. I would imagine this will cause more echo and reflection of sound. I will most likely add an area rug, but is there something else I can plan while the furniture is out of the room to improve my sound?

If you know where your speakers will be located place absorbers at the first reflection points, especially the side walls. An area rug (depending on it's size) may be good for the first floor reflections. If you go all out you can do the same for the ceiling. At least one poster here treats his ceiling.

Well, The floors have been installed. Contractor has to come back and finish the stairs.
Here's a shot of the room now.

All my gear is disconnected and sitting in my workshop space :(

@JoeESP9,
Where would you shop to find nicer looking treatments for the walls at the first reflection points?
I've done a bit of reading about treating for acoustics, but can never find good looking panels. I don't want it to look like a recording studio :/

Modern acoustic wall treatments bear little resemblance to the egg crate foam that many equate with acoustic treatments.

Check out GIK Acoustics Art Panels. They will custom print just about anything on their panels.

Acoustimac offers their panels in a wide variety of colors and art work.

Most companies that make acoustic panels have numerous color and style options.

Thanks! Those are definately some good options as far as color/pattern choice. Does anyone ever treat the floor?
I planned an area rug, but is there some sort of padding I can place under the rug to help absorb too?

EDIT: Google gives me some results :)

what are the room dimensions?

Also, I replaced the Grado Black on my Orbit with an AT 440-MLB cart. I like the sound of the AT over the Grado, more open and detailed on the highs. YMMV though.

I just realized the images in my first two posts are broken. Hmmmm.
Room is 11' x 12' - it's the lower left bedroom on p.2

Thanks for the suggestion on the Grado upgrade. I haven't tried the silver stylus on the black cart yet. I though about trying an Ortofon red too. We'll see. I may just save to upgrade the table. I really like the VPI tables, but they costmore than my whole setup. ><
someday!

Lots of us have floor treatments. They are called rugs/carpets.:D
The two places you linked are more for the custom install I'm building a room crowd. Dynamat is very popular with the car stereo crowd.
