I have a friend that just got a mint pair of Kenwood KL-555D.

12" Woofer, 2 x Mid-range, 2 x Tweeters.

He complaints about the bass been shy and treble dark. Little bass, little highs. He used a tube amp. he also have other speakers (Wharfedale Diamonds, Infinity Qb,...)

Are these Kenwood any good?

Thanks

The lack of highs could be due to the old caps in the crossover. The lack of bass is likely due to the design. Too large a woofer in too small of a cabinet.

Ditto on the caps. Adding a lot of insulation in the cabinet enhanced the bass substantially as well on my pair - pretty weak in that department from the factory.

I had the same complaints when I briefly had a pair of those. Mine didn't last long here and I wouldn't put any effort in trying to make them into something listenable.

UPDATE: Tested one tweeter, it is burnt.

Components (woofer, mid, tweeter, x-over) look cheap.

The only good thing so far is... the cabinet.

My friend is planing on spending up to $15 to fix them.

Up to $15, huh? Righteous bucks. Those would be a good cabinet to use for the "Econowave" speaker build but it would be more an expense than that amount.
