Would it be better to limit maximum output of amp or control volume through the preamp to protect speakers from overload? Thanks

Most integrated amps are designed to produce their rate output with normal input source levels, with the volume control set to around 1/2 (or 12:00). That is a good rule of thumb for the combo you are asking about. I suggest that you set the preamp volume control to 1/2 (12:00), then set the power amp to where the music is pretty much as loud as you will normally ever need. You will have more if you ever need it.

I drive AR9s, EPI-A500s and Magneplanars with my power amp set to 1/2. The preamp then has plenty of good control resolution.

I prefer to leave the attenuation dials on the amp at zero attenuation (full output) unless needed to balance the output between multiple amps, and even then I only use the attenuation dials as little as possible.
