Marantz 1060 and buddy

My buddy is the technician guy for the Hifi shop in the city.

Of course he has already what he wants, ton of amp, preamp, CD player, turntable... His home is a museum (15 pair of speakers, 30 cartridges, etc...) and he usually uses a pair of wilson audio, new version of NuForce ref 9 amps, a nice SP11 Audio Research, big cables, all and all...

Recently I explained him the Marantz 1060 is THE Marantz he need. So he bought a defective 1060 for 50€ on epay, in perfect cosmetic condition, with the user manuel.

The default was on the amp section. My buddy decided to change all the caps on the amp section, bought some very average components, done an alignment an finishes the job with an oscilloscope... And powered on to listen to an old little integrated Marantz, with no illusion, with a pair of little speakers...

It's ok, let's align the unit :

We need to finalize the alignement :

After two days, moving the 1060 to his main system, my buddy send me a mail, explaining he cannot believe what this little old unit is able to do !

Maybe this is the beginning of another conversion ?

Is that fuse board in front of the transformer stock? I dont have that in either of my 1060's.

I wonder if it was added in later models or if it was a modification.

Ideas?

Yes, it's the fuse board and it seems not to be a mod.

In a 5 seconds comparison with my own 1060, it seems the components are not in the same place in the preamp board...

I guess during the years of commercialisation a lot of changes occurs on the design. Sometimes a connector change produced a "B" version, sometimes a bigger change use exactly the same designation...

What kind of amplifiers does he use in his main set-up?

OK, I recognize that pic. I have a defective 1060 amp board too. I just made up a parts list for it. All new caps and many resistors and all new transistors and diodes are needed.

Only problem is the service manual lists components that aren't on the board and there appear to be several mods to the board with a few wrong values here and there and a couple of ceramic caps and resistors on the underside of the board. Is there anything on the underside of your board?

Also the board markings carry positions for 2 pairs of caps that are not specced inhe service manual. What guidance did your buddy use?

My board is also a mess - the previous repair wasn't done too well and I'm trying to preserve it but it's a pretty desperate case I'm afraid.

If anyone has a spare board...

I think he only read the value on the caps to order what he had seen. Anayway I can ask him the list of the caps : if you think you have the same board it's ok for you.

Interested to hear what he thinks after he has had more chance to listen to the 1060 and compare it with this other gear.

I have a nice one in a wooden case, working but probably due for a re-cap, and have passed up on several more since getting it. [Too many choices, just can't get them all.] Just the other day a guy with another one -cosmetically excellent, in a wooden case that is very good (a few minor nicks or scratches) made a drop in the asking price for me, to where I might be getting another very, very soon! Not sure why, except that they are, indeed, sweet-sounding amps!

I don't think anyone around here sees these as anything different from any other amp in that series. The prices are no higher for this model than for similar ones near it in the series. The "mystique" of the 1060 apparently hasn't penetrated local-market consciousness, so they still sell cheaply here. Maybe local people don't read AK much, because it is in English? Or maybe the people with money for audio are too busy buying Pass Labs, Moon, Krell, etc... to bother with these, leavign them for the pooerer exporters (and me :D). The one difference I see is that a few more of this model have wooden cases than the others; maybe people who bought them were more apt to house them better?

The plan for the 1060 is to compare the two versions : my unrecapped and his freshly recapped and wery well tuned...

I will ask Casimir if he wants to compare the preamp section with his Audio Research SP11, but you know the SP11 is - in my opinion - one of the best preamp I've heard. I consider the comparison is unfair. Not the same price / class / purpose...

BTW a nice vintage preamp with tube could be a SP11 ?
