Marantz 1060 power supply question

I recently purchased a 1060 off eBay. It was as-is so I knew what I was getting into. I brought it up on the variac and it was drawing a lot of current even at low line voltage (15VAC). In trying to isolate where the current draw was coming from I've cut the input to the power amp, pre amp, and phono boards. No change.

However, when I looked at the bottom of the power supply board I noticed 2 heavy green wires going back to the tranny. They are wired to posts 804 and 805 which is part of the ground plane. I don't see these on my schematic. This seems wrong.

Also, the on/off light is wired to 804 and 805 which is ground!

Any ideas?

The lamp on a 1060 is powered directly from the transformer. If I recall correctly the leads to the lamp are green.

The P800 board is powered from the transformer through pins J801, J802 and J803

Do you have a service manual? If not you can download a copy from the AK data base

Here's a fail P800 board from this weekend, it speaks for itself. . .

I lifted the 2 green wires and they had voltage on them: 1Vac with wall voltage at 20Vac. I hope nothing went wrong in the tranny dumping that to ground.

Even with the 2 green wires lifted it was still drawing a lot of current. Hmmm. I'll isolate the PS board next.

Yes, I'm working with the service manual. I'd be lost without it.

It's looking like the rectifier. I think. With the tranny hooked to nothing but the rectifier (no lamp, no ps board) and with the rectifier disconnected from the 2 bypass caps and the main ps cap, there is still a lot of current draw.

However, when I removed the rectifier it seemed to pass the diode test (0.45VDC one way and open the other).

With the rectifier removed from the tranny there is no large current draw. I hooked the ps board back up and there's still minimal current.

I'll rig up some new ps rectifier diodes and see what happens.

It's definitely the rectifier. I hooked another one up to the tranny and there was no current draw.

Does anyone know where I can get a Marantz rectifier? Saw one on eBay but it was $20 or so. Maybe that's a deal, I don't know. The temp one I used won't fit.

excessive current may have cooked the rectifier ..replace and observe
i am sure there are lots of generic ones that will fit in the space as long as it will handle the designed current of the amp it should be ok .

You can get a nice IXYS one from partsconnexion for about $20. Should out-perform the original.
It's about the same size, just smaller in all dimensions, but the package it is in is very similar to the original, could probably just adapt it to fit.
You should probably recap the power supply board and the main filter cap as well as the output coupling caps, while you are out it. Check out the threads.

Thanks! 5B2 Part is on order.

I'm also doing a re-cap. Here's my list. I used these for another 1060 (my brother's) and it sounded so good that I had to have one!

Those were all ordered from Parts Connexion a couple days ago. Didn't know they were in short supply. I think it was $19.95. They have a good selection and prices are OK but delivery is slow and pricey. Amazon Prime has completely spoiled me. :)

You can order from Parts Connexion but they won't tell you if something is out of stock until after they process your order.

New/used rectifier has arrived and been installed. Amp is alive again and sounds great even before the re-cap.

I re-routed the green wires from the tranny secondary to go directly to the twisted white wires from the on/off lamp. The lamp works great.

I'm amazed that the tranny wasn't damaged from having that wired directly to chassis ground (its original state when I got it). But then again, since the chassis floats maybe it just put 6VAC (or 12, not sure) on the whole chassis?

Thanks everyone!

When you do the amp board be careful of the 2 diodes that are attached from the back of the board to the heat sink. They can break off easily if your not careful.

Also watch out for incorrectly marked polarity on the boards. I did a 1030 recently and more than one-half of the markings on the phono board were wrong.

This looks like a great list (and thank you). I understand for the filter caps on top where they fit, but for the Elna Cerafine Capacitor 470uF (for example) I'm not sure what capacitor this replaces. Do you have these cross referenced with the service manual?
