Marantz 112 Tuner.

With my 140 amp and 3200 Preamp restored it seems a shame to not at the very least replace the capacitors in the 112 tuner. I'm not looking to mess things up with the tuner as far as semis and such are concerned , to change the sonic signature of the unit. Is it the opinion of most that just changing out the caps and nothing else is ok? I'm just thinking that it won't hurt to just freshen things up as the caps in the tuner are the same age as the amp and Pre. Or is it best to leave it as is, due to the fact that replacing caps won't yield any sonic improvement in the tuner?

Do the caps, I’ve recapped many tuners with great success - use film for the low value caps on the tuner boards.

Thanks BK. I've checked the boards and I believe I have enough Nichicon KL and Wimas to complete it, or would you suggest a different series of caps. I wouldn't think heat to be an issue in this unit just the same.

Great thanks for confirming.
Before I recap I’m replacing the fuse lamps with warm white LEDs in the dial face and meter as well as new vellum in both as well. Was just about to do the input lamps and just realized that 4 of the 5 lamps are different. Seems as the AM one is the lone sheep and I think it’s 8volts and I have a 8v LED to replace it with but the other 4 have a red base and I think they are 6.3V. Would I be correct to assume I can’t use the 8v LED for all five lamps? If not I’ll either have to leave the 4- 6.3v ones or do a specific order for them. Damn.

Don’t recall the lamp housing in the receivers I’ve done in the past being this YELLOW. Really cast a dull hue even with the LED’s. I may give the plastic housing a quick spray of base white so it reflects better but I’m not sure it will be worth all the effort.

Hmmm. I'll have to check to see if I have any cool white. I have always only used warm white in all my units as I find personally they are more close to the originals but that's just a personal preference. If I can find cool white I'll try to see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm basing it on what DGWojo (AK lamp guru) told me in a recent inquiry about LED replacements for Marantz. I intensely dislike the look of most of the LED "Upgrades" in Marantz gear. The over-blue makes my eyes hurt and makes the dial numbers hard to read (just my opinion).

Any suggestions on my above post regarding the 8V in place of the 6.3V?? Maybe DGWojo might have some advise.

I don't recall ever seeing any of those red-base bulbs in any Marantz, so I'm not sure. I'd probably try the 8v LED in one of the spots and see...

I don't have the housing removed but I'm gonna take the time to mask it off for a quick spray of white like you did before I button it up.
Also according to a response from DOWojo he says that " there's no problem running a 8v LED in a 6.3v circuit.

I'm on the home stretch with just 4 of those blue blob ( tantalum??) caps left to replace on the 200 PCB. I think they might be 50v .22uF ( not near the unit at the moment) so I assume these, like the electrolytic caps need to be changed out as well? If so I will have to order some Wimas in .22uF value.

Got this thing finished before leaving for work tonight ( I really shouldn't be working on it while doing the night shift as focus isn't the greatest ) and plugged it in to have a quick listen. Seems as though I goofed something up because I have very little sound coming from the right channel on FM. There is some sound if I turn the volume all the way up. AM seems to be ok. Never had time to investigate before running out the door for work. I'll have to recheck all the caps and wires etc to see if I missed something obvious.

Went over every solder joint 3 times now looking for anything that I may have missed. Checked all caps for proper polarity and all check out ok. Then with it hooked up I depressed the Dolby button multiple times and noticed increased volume in the right channel. A glimmer of hope!!! Disconnected it and took it back to the bench for a Deoxit treatment. I remember cleaning the switches back when I first got this unit but I guess sitting on the shelf since then is not conducive to proper operation today. Anyway after working the Dolby button a number of times it seems that was the problem all along. The right channel still cuts out briefly occasionally if manipulating the button but I'm hopeful that after repeated use tomorrow things will be better.

Finally done restoring the three units and it sure sounds sweet paired with a set of advent loud speakers..These things sure do ooze a certain kind of warmth that todays production is lacking to some degree.... just like the automobiles of yesteryear
