I'm looking at a really nice Marantz 2270 that is available locally. It has a serial number of 52219J4 which I can't find any info on. Does anyone know how to decode that serial number (pic attached)?

Thank you in advance for the help.

The J4 suffix indicates the unit is equipped with a universal power transformer. Inside a terminal strip allows the unit to be switched between 100, 120, 200, 220,& 240 voltage sources. Sequential numbering for the 2270 started at 1000, so you have the 52,219 unit manufactured (minus -999). They made a total of 84,484 units. Remove the top cover and inside by the tuning string, stamped on the aluminum bar usually on the right, you will find the date of manufacture.

Here's the date on my 2325, March 9, 1976.

Thank you for the reply and very helpful information. Would this still be considered a quality unit or are some of the earlier ones better?

They are all good. The later units have had most of the bugs engineered out, so should be very stable. The pre-3900 serial numbers are in high demand because of the rarity of the "engraved" face plate and even more rare, champagne colored engraved face plate. But earlier models had some significant design flaws that were corrected in later models. If the price is right, jump on it. But be aware that if it is original, it will likely need significant work to get it in good working order for the long run.
