Yep, that little stage adds around 20-30db of gain and does the RIAA compensation curve correction. If the unit supports MC type cartridges also then there is another 20-30 db gain added on top of that.
This added gain makes it more vulnerable to noise and is why there is usually a grounding lug near the inputs to wire to the turntable.

Thanks guys I know its a big difference. I just want to make sure that after the phono stage, the signal path goes the same place as the aux input. No other funny capacitors or what not.
