To be honest, it actually looks pretty tidy, might be the best MC2300 example there is....
 
Find out who made it and see how they made the side rails.

That secret might be worth the 'research' put into the amplifier alone.
 
IMO this has little to do with mcintosh and more to do with having more money than you know what to do with.
I've seen gold light switch and outlet plates. They obviously don't make your lights and or power better. I've heard of desserts and cocktails laced with gold. You get no drunker and I'd doubt you could taste the trace of gold.
It's a case of it goes to eleven. Nothing more.
If you want a gold plated 2300 (or solid gold) 2300 and you have the coin, have at it.
 
Those side rails were machine out of aluminum plate on a CNC machine. Why they didn't incorporate the 4 mounting tabs into the rails is a mystery to me. Those sheet metal tabs look horrendous.
I'm with Andy on my opinion of the gold treatment.
